Bren Sawall for Pewaukee School Board

Bren Sawall for Pewaukee School Board I'm a nurse, a business owner, and a grandmother of two in the Pewaukee School District.

I have a Nurse degree as well as a Bachelor's in Business Administration. I feel my medical background and my business degree/experience make me a good candidate.

I just voted and I hope you will take the opportunity today as well! I was excited to see how busy the polls were. It tells me that voters in Pewaukee are aware of how important this election is and using their voice...their vote.

Thank you, Pewaukee, for all your kindness and support the past several weeks. I have met so many wonderful people at their door, in the street and over a cup of coffee. I've heard all the things that make you appreciate our wonderful PSD. I've also heard your concerns and if I'm lucky enough to win your vote, I promise to always fight for your seat at the table and the best education for your child.

Thank You, Pewaukee.

What is CRT (Critical Race Theory)?

CRT is an outgrowth of Marxism that replaces class categories with racial groups. Promoters of CRT claim that our nation is plagued by systemic racism in all aspects of our US society. Such things as our constitutional law and standardized tests are the root cause of “racial inequality.”

Schools that endorse CRT incorporate key elements into their policies, training programs, curriculum, and class activities. Often it is not referred to as CRT but instead uses phrasing such as “culturally responsive teaching” and “diversity, equity, and inclusion” (DEI).

Should CRT be a part of PSD’s curriculum?

Every parent/guardian must answer this question. I believe CRT doesn't have a place in our curriculum. Our goal shouldn’t be to divide our kids into groups that look at each other as “oppressors” or themselves as “oppressed.” Every student deserves an education free of bias based on race, religion, or economic class.

How will you know if your child is being exposed to this ideology?

Ask them how their day went, what topics were discussed, did they learn anything new or exciting? What resources were utilized in the classroom? You can also request information regarding the curriculum your child is being taught. In 1974, a little-known law passed, The Protection of Pupil Rights Act 20 U.S.C. 1232h. This law states:
· Any school receiving federal funding must disclose to parents any instructional material used in the curriculum.
· Allow parents to inspect instructional materials, teacher manuals, films, tapes, or any other supplemental materials used in the course you are requesting.

Be INVOLVED… Be AWARE… Be PROACTIVE…

I encourage you to attend BOE Meetings personally, hear what new curriculum is being considered, what new policies are being voted on, and how your elected board members respond to parent/guardian and community concerns.

I HEAR YOU………
For the past several weeks, I’ve had the privilege of going door to door and the opportunity to talk with parents, grandparents and the community. I ask, “What do you like about PSD?” and “What are your concerns, if any?”
I felt I owed it to the community, to voice and share these responses, to allow others to gain insight from them.

Grateful….

● For wonderful teachers who put their heart into teaching our kids.
● For dedicated volunteers who give their time willingly.
● For our awesome Sports programs that hone our kids skills but also teach them about teamwork, integrity and discipline.
● For all the work that Dr. Mike Cady put into keeping everyone informed on COVID and always trying to be fair with all sides.

Concerns….

● Divisive ideology – it may not be infused in the curriculum, but they are hearing things at the dinner table that tell them it’s in class discussions.
● Test Scores - ASA Clark parents are especially concerned after seeing recent results.
● Girls Sports – Worried about keeping their sport intact for years to come so after years of hard work, they don’t lose their opportunity to compete or earn scholarships.
● Education Alternatives - How many have taken their kids out of PSD and are doing either home school or private education?
● Communication- There seems to be a roadblock in addressing certain issues that are brought up. How can parents/grandparents be heard and feel like some of the things bothering us can be addressed?
● Mental Health - The affects of the last 2 years of virtual school, masking, and isolation. How can we assist and help our kids who continue to struggle?

Whether you agree with one or all of these concerns, they are credible and real because your fellow parents, grandparents and community members have expressed them.

I want to say THANK YOU to my awesome community! I love Pewaukee and want nothing more than to represent you and your children on the Pewaukee School Board. I enjoyed all of the conversations with you whether it was at your door, in the street or over a cup of coffee.
If I’m elected, I PROMISE to keep having these conversations because I believe my greatest responsibility is to LISTEN.
