What if school felt less like a factory and more like a children’s museum? 🏛️✨

In our new episode, "Wildly Gifted, Wildly Impactful," veteran AIG teacher Jamie Finch shares why she’s still wildly passionate about gifted education—and how we can better support these unique minds.

We’re diving into myth-busting the biggest misconceptions about gifted learners, tapping into curiosity, collaborating with classroom teachers, and how NCAGT builds connection and keeps educators inspired.

Thank you for reminding us what meaningful learning looks like.

Here’s to a year filled with curiosity, challenge and conversations worth continuing.

Meaningful engagement creates opportunities for deeper thinking. While these signs benefit every learner, they're especially important for gifted students, who thrive when instruction moves beyond compliance and invites curiosity, reasoning, and meaningful challenge.

Engagement or Evidence of Thinking?

They’re explaining their thinking. Not just answering questions.
They’re revising their thinking. Because new ideas matter.
They’re connecting ideas. Not just completing tasks.
They’re staying with the challenge. Even when it’s difficult.
They’re still thinking tomorrow. The lesson didn’t end with the bell.

Tell us about a lesson you'll never forget.

What happened that made you keep thinking about it even after class was over?

The North Carolina Association for the Gifted and Talented is proud to announce a new initiative in support of North Carolina’s gifted and talented students and their families: “The Family Tour.” In the coming academic year, there will be a series of events that will be held in different regions across the state. The first of these will be held in southeastern North Carolina in New Hanover County on Saturday, September 12, with events in other regions to follow.

Each event will offer activities for the children and presentations and information for their parents or caregivers. Teachers will lead the children in hands-on, minds-on activities that stimulate curiosity, and creative and critical thinking. The children will choose sessions by age range and the activities will be developmentally appropriate for that age group - and FUN! While those “classes” are going on, parents will be invited to hear from some of the state’s leaders in the field of gifted education on topics designed to inform and guide them as they deal with the challenges of nurturing their gifted children.

Teachers are being selected to lead the classes. All interested teachers and specialists are invited to offer their services, teaching their favorite activities to a group of eager learners. More information and an application form to propose a topic/activity will be found at this site: https://tinyurl.com/NCAGTProposals.

Registration for families is open here: https://www.ncagt.org/event-details/ncagt-family-tour-wilmington

NCAGT expresses its sincere appreciation and gratitude to the staff of the New Hanover County Schools, particularly Dr. Lo DeWalt for the support they are providing in collaboration with NCAGT on this project.

This month we've been talking about meaningful engagement—the kind that inspires students to think deeply, make connections, and keep learning long after class ends.

Teachers, we know those moments don't always show up on a test or worksheet.
Sometimes they happen in a conversation.

Sometimes they're a question no one expected.

Sometimes it's the look on a student's face when everything suddenly comes together.

Tell us about a student "aha!" moment you'll never forget.

Your story might inspire another educator as we all begin a new school year.
