📚Join me for a Summer Reading Challenge!

One of the highlights of a recent personal trip to Philadelphia was walking through the places where our nation’s founders debated, disagreed, compromised, and ultimately shaped the Constitution that still guides us today.

As we approach America’s 250th anniversary, I’ve committed to listening to an audiobook: The Summer of 1787 by David O. Stewart, because I’m curious about how the Constitution came together and the people behind it.

This summer, I’d like to invite students, families, teachers, and community members to join me in a simple challenge:

📖 Read 3 books between June and August
🎧 Any format counts: books, e-books, or audiobooks
🌎 Any language counts: English, Spanish, or any language you love

My hope is that we spend a little time this summer exploring new ideas, learning something unexpected, and sharing our favorite reads with one another.

Need help finding a book? The Pflugerville Public Library has wonderful resources for readers of all ages:
https://library.pflugervilletx.gov

📚 To get us started, tell me in the comments: What book are you reading this summer, or what book would you recommend to others?

I’ll be sharing my summer reading journey and highlighting recommendations from students, families, educators, and community members throughout the summer.

Let’s make this a summer of curiosity, courage, service, and great books.

Last week I attended my second TASB Summer Leadership Institute in San Antonio, joining trustees from across Texas to learn, reflect, and prepare for the work ahead.

One highlight was a legislative panel featuring State Rep. Mary Gonzalez (District 75/El Paso), Rep. Gary Van Deaver (District 1/Northeast TX) and Rep. Diego Bernal (District 123/San Antonio area). The discussion reinforced the importance of building relationships, sharing the real experiences of our students and educators, and continuing to advocate for strong public schools. Public education needs informed voices at every level, and trustees have an important role to play.

Another meaningful session was led by fellow trustee Jean Mayer, who spoke about accountability and humanity in special education. Her message was a powerful reminder that governance is not only about compliance and systems, but also about ensuring every student is seen, supported, and given the opportunity to succeed.

I was also honored to see former Pflugerville ISD Trustee Vernagene Mott receive the James B. Crow Innovation in Governance Award. Her message resonated deeply: on the 250th anniversary of our nation, democracy matters. Her call to move forward with "Texas grit and gusto" is a reminder that serving our communities requires persistence, courage, and a belief that the work is worth doing.

As I head into my second year as a Pflugerville ISD Trustee, I remain committed to listening, learning, and growing so I can better serve our students, staff, families, and community.

Representation matters, and every future voter deserves the opportunity to see themselves as part of our democracy. Events like Paws to the Polls help young people build confidence, learn how their voices matter, and understand the power of civic participation.

Today we remember and honor the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our country. As we gather with loved ones, may we pause with gratitude for those who made the ultimate sacrifice for the freedoms we enjoy. 🇺🇸

=====================

Two very different events today, connected by one powerful theme: service to others.

Earlier today at Hendrickson High School, I had the honor of attending a ceremony hosted by Congressman Pete Sessions recognizing Lucas Zavaleta on his appointment to the United States Naval Academy. Watching a young person commit himself to a path of service, sacrifice, and leadership was incredibly inspiring. Congratulations, Lucas, your community is proud of you.

Later this evening, I joined PfISD’s Seal of Biliteracy Honor Ceremony and had the privilege of speaking with students and families about my own bilingual journey. I shared how something I once viewed as a challenge eventually became one of my greatest strengths because language is not just about words, it’s about connection and service.

Just this morning, I was reminded of that when I stepped in to do a last-minute Spanish media interview through my personal volunteer work with the League of Women Voters. Not because of a title, but because I have a skill and a willingness to serve.

Whether through military service, civic engagement, or using our voices and talents to help others, today’s students reminded me of something important: our gifts matter most when we use them for something bigger than ourselves.

Congratulations to all of our students today. Keep learning. Stay curious. Stay humble. And when the moment comes and someone says, “We need someone who can help,” I hope you raise your hand.

Yesterday I had the opportunity to volunteer at Park Crest Middle School for the Mad City Money simulation hosted by A+ Federal Credit Union.

Students stepped into real-world scenarios, making decisions about housing, transportation, childcare, and everyday expenses, all while working within a budget. It’s one thing to talk about financial literacy in a classroom, it’s another to live it, even in a simulation.

A big thank you to A+ Federal Credit Union for sponsoring and bringing this hands-on learning experience to our students, to the volunteers like parents I sat with Teghan and Karen who showed up to guide and challenge them, and to Park Crest Middle School for prioritizing opportunities that prepare students for life beyond the classroom.

This is exactly the kind of learning that builds confidence, responsibility, and real-world readiness. The best thing, A+ Federal Credit Union wants to bring this experiential learning experiences to more campuses and community groups, reach out to them if interested!

At a recent PFISD board workshop, I shared information about a presentation I saw from Our Schools Our Democracy, a 501c3 organization established in 2024 to protect the fundamental rights of all Texans to a free, quality public education through research, education, outreach, and advocacy. There is an opportunity to come learn more and engage in this important conversation on May 5th. I encourage members of the Pflugerville community to attend this community-led event. Note that this is not an ISD affiliated event.
