With temperatures climbing, remember to check on your loved ones, neighbors, and especially older adults who may be more vulnerable to the heat.

Drink plenty of water throughout the day.
Stay indoors or in the shade whenever possible.
Limit time in direct sunlight, especially during the hottest part of the day.
Avoid strenuous outdoor activities when temperatures are at their highest.

Heat-related illness can develop quickly. Stay cool, stay hydrated, and keep an eye on each other.

🚨 Did you know Text-to-911 is available statewide in Alabama?

While calling is always preferred, we know it isn't always possible or safe. Remember this golden rule: Call when you can, text when you can't.

This service is a vital lifeline for our deaf and hard-of-hearing community, or in emergencies where speaking out loud could put you in danger.

🌐 You can also text 9-1-1 in languages other than English and our dispatchers will utilize translation software to assist you.

📱 How to use Text-to-9-1-1:
1️⃣ Open your text messaging app.
2️⃣ In your FIRST text, type your exact location and the nature of the emergency.
3️⃣ Press send and remain ready to answer additional questions from our dispatchers.

Happy 4th of July and 250th of the United States of America!

It’s getting dark so, let’s all work hard to preserve our digits tonight.

As you celebrate with family and friends this Fourth of July, we ask everyone to make safety part of the celebration.

A few reminders:

• Don’t use Fireworks where not permitted.
• Never leave fireworks unattended.
• Keep a bucket of water or a hose nearby when using fireworks.
• Keep children and pets a safe distance away from fireworks.
• Never use fireworks while impaired by alcohol or drugs.
• Dispose of used fireworks by soaking them in water before throwing them away.
• Grill outdoors and keep grills away from homes, decks, and anything that can catch fire.

Most importantly, know when to call 911. Call for emergencies such as fires, serious injuries, or situations where life or property is in immediate danger. For non-emergency concerns, please use the appropriate non-emergency resources so dispatchers can remain available for those who need immediate help.

The Alabama Forestry Commission joins the wildland fire community in mourning the loss of three federal wildland firefighters who gave their lives in the line of duty. Their service stands as a powerful reminder of the courage and sacrifice demonstrated by wildland firefighters every day.

We honor their service and extend our deepest condolences to their families, loved ones, and fellow firefighters.

May we never forget those who gave everything, leaving behind a legacy of bravery and selflessness.

Avoid working outside when possible, if not wear loose fitting UV protective clothing and have access to shade and hydration.

Remember to also keep up with salt/electrolyte intake, as water is not as effective alone.

As severe weather moves through our area, it’s important to understand the difference between a Tornado Watch and a Tornado Warning. Knowing the difference can save your life.

TORNADO WATCH
A Tornado Watch means weather conditions are favorable for tornadoes to develop.

This is: “Be Ready.”

When a Tornado Watch is issued:
• Review your emergency plan.
• Identify your safe shelter location.
• Charge phones and backup batteries.
• Monitor local weather, NOAA Weather Radio, and emergency alerts.
• Stay alert for changing conditions.

A watch does NOT mean a tornado has been seen, only that conditions are right for one to develop.

TORNADO WARNING
A Tornado Warning means a tornado has been sighted or indicated by weather radar.

This is: “Take Cover Now.”

When a Tornado Warning is issued:
• Move immediately to a basement, storm shelter, or the lowest floor of a sturdy building.
• Stay away from windows and exterior walls.
• Shelter in an interior room, hallway, bathroom, or closet.
• Cover your head and neck with your arms, blankets, helmets, or mattresses if available.
• Do not waste time looking outside for the tornado.

If You’re in a Vehicle:
• Do not try to outrun a tornado.
• Seek shelter in a sturdy building immediately.
• If no shelter is available, move to a low-lying area and protect your head. Be aware of potential flooding hazards.

Stay Weather Aware
• Enable Wireless Emergency Alerts on your phone.
• Keep multiple ways to receive warnings.
• Never rely on outdoor warning sirens alone, especially while indoors or asleep.

WATCH = Be Prepared
WARNING = Take Action

Your safety is our priority. Stay informed, have a plan, and be ready to act quickly when severe weather threatens.
