Spotted behind the Cope House: Chelone glabra, aka Turtlehead🐢

This native plant gets its name from its blooms, which resemble a turtle peeking out of its shell. Fun fact: in Greek mythology (for fans of Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey), Chelone was a nymph who insulted the gods and was turned into a turtle as punishment. (Source: USDA Forest Service, "Turtlehead," Plant of the Week, fs.usda.gov)

Love learning about plants? Join Awbury's Food Forest Foraging Workshop this Saturday–lead volunteer Jeannie Gerth hosts a Sassafras Harvest, and on October 10th we'll gather for a Buckeye Harvest.

Register via the link in bio, and remember, Awbury's grounds are open daily from dawn to dusk!

📸 Surprise Inside: Walter Plotnick at The Cope House Gallery

Philadelphia-based photo artist Walter Plotnick brings his Surprise Inside series to The Cope House Gallery at Awbury Arboretum this September!

His photographic collages: playful, nostalgic, and full of energy, use the visual metaphor of unfolding boxes to capture those pivotal moments of anticipation when the unknown is revealed. By combining people and cardboard boxes through repeated angles and forms, Plotnick creates images that are as visually striking as they are just plain fun to look at.

On view: September 3rd – October 30th, 2026
Opening Reception: September 24th, 6–8pm | Artist Talk at 7:15pm

If you enjoy beautiful, native, tart fruit, you might like Aronia melanocarpa, better known as chokeberry.

Chokeberry grows around the Cope House gardens, where it’s enjoyed by both wildlife and people. Awbury Adventure Camp forages it for educational purposes, but you can also their rich color to make a natural dye.

Interested in foraging at Awbury? Sign up for our Food Forest Foraging workshop on August 29th for a sassafras harvest with lead volunteer Jeannie Gerth! You can register using the 🔗 in our bio.

Please join us in welcoming Mai Eltahir to the Awbury Arboretum team 🌳

Not only does Mai bring a wealth of knowledge to the role of Volunteer Coordinator, she's bringing the spirit necessary to revitalize our volunteer program!

“I am very excited to contribute to the Awbury community through building operations for volunteer gatherings and opportunities, with the mission of expanding ideas and practices interweaving relational and land cultivation on the grounds. It is truly a privilege to learn and work among talented and thoughtful conspirators (staff, volunteers, Germantown neighbors) germinating the understanding and practices of land, environment, and commons.”
