Fall Grief Walk at The Woodlands on Tuesday, October 13 at 5:30pm

Fall is a season of transformation. Change is visible all around us. This walk + workshop invites participants to explore the connections between grief, memory, and the cycles of nature within the quiet landscape of the cemetery.  Through readings, walking among the trees, writing, and optional group sharing, we will reflect on how the season may model for us ways to understand and navigate our grief.

Facilitated by Susanna Gilbertson, a social worker, facilitator, and certified grief coach

Registration: By donation; no one turned away for lack of funds ($20 suggested).

Gather at the front gates between 5:15 PM and 5:30 PM
The walk will begin at 5:30 PM and last until 6:30 PM

🌚🔭 Have you ever wondered what the cemetery feels like under a New Moon? On Friday, October 9, The Woodlands will open its gates after dark for an eerie autumn evening.

A New Moon marks the beginning of a lunar cycle. This phase occurs when the Moon is positioned between the Earth and the Sun, making it nearly invisible from Earth. That means less moonlight and a darker sky that’s perfect for stargazing. ✨

💀🍂🪦👻🔥

Bring your own chairs, blankets, flashlights, picnics, and beverages, then warm yourself by the fire pits before venturing into the historic Hamilton Core with a special self-guided tour. In honor of the New Moon, the Rittenhouse Astronomical Society will set up telescopes so you can explore the stars on one of the darkest nights of the month.

✨ AFTER HOURS: UNDER THE NEW MOON

🗓 Friday, October 9 | 5:00–8:00 PM

🎟 $10 General Admission | Free for Members

GATES CLOSED FOR SITE-WIDE TREE WORK on Thursday, September 17.

The site will be closed to all visitors this Thursday. The closure is necessary for everyone's safety while tree work takes place in high-traffic areas. Thank you for your understanding, and a big thank you to for taking on this important work!

Did you know caring for the over 1,000 trees here is one of the biggest expenses for The Woodlands each year? You can help care for our trees by contributing to our Tree Fund anytime.

🍂 September is a time when many folks visit the cemetery for the first time, particularly new students and people seeking some seasonal spooky time. Greeted by the dazzling dahlias, the turning of the leaves, and the meandering brick pathways, it’s easy to get lost in the magic of The Woodlands and forget, despite the towering monuments, that these 54 acres are not a public park, in function or funding.

🪦 The Woodlands has been an active, private cemetery since 1840. This year alone, 18 people have been buried at The Woodlands, and three burials are scheduled in the coming month. To protect mourners' privacy, we do not publicize burials, funerals, or celebrations of life on the events calendar; we place a sign at the front entrance whenever a burial is taking place.

♥️ If you notice an interment or funeral happening while visiting the site, please keep your distance and respect the mourners. To help this space remain a respite for both the living and the dead, please remember our key rules:

• Do not climb, sit, or lean on headstones—they are heavy and historic
• Dogs must be on a leash at all times, with no exceptions
• Biking is allowed on paved roads only—do not bike on the dirt running path
• Help protect our trees and flowers! Do not climb trees, swing on low branches, use hammocks or slacklines, or pick any flowers from the grounds
• Children and youth under the age of 14 must be with an adult at all times
• The cemetery is a ‘leave no trace space.’ Take your trash with you, and pick up after your dogs—a bin is available outside the front gates
• Parking is allowed for Woodlands visitors only. Please park alongside the curb, allowing for other vehicles to pass. Avoid parking at a turn in the road, or in front of the bollards to maintain emergency vehicle access
• The Woodlands is a no-smoking site
• The site is open daily from dawn until dusk. When you see UCD lights flashing or the sun beginning to set, make your way to the gates—don’t get locked in!
