David Quixano, a young Jewish-Russian immigrant is composing a major symphony hailing the promise of America while falling in love with a Russian-Christian immigrant, Vera. But his dreams for his and America's future may be derailed when he encounters nightmares from his Russian past.

Zangwill's 1908 melodrama popularized the metaphor of America as a great "melting pot", a place where immigrants from all over the world come to mix together in the crucible of the country. In this fast-paced adaptation, Theatre Ariel and PAC come together at the end of America 250 to respond to the flames burning beneath our present-day crucible.

A signer of the Declaration of Independence, musician, artist, and former Christ Church choir director, Hopkinson also claimed credit for designing the American flag. In 1780, he even requested payment for his design work, suggesting approximately 28 gallons of w**e as compensation!

On October 2, his fifth-great-granddaughter, Sarah Jenkins Smith, visited his grave at Christ Church Burial Ground to commemorate his birthday.

Sarah has spent time researching and sharing her ancestor's often-overlooked contributions to American history, including authoring "Designer of the Stars and Stripes: The Forgotten Legacy of Francis Hopkinson" for the 2022 July/August issue of the DAR's American Spirit magazine. Sarah also generously donated the Francis Hopkinson flags that proudly stand by his memorial in the Burial Ground.

We're grateful Sarah stopped by to honor his memory and share this remarkable family connection. Sarah is currently a member the Col. John Streett Chapter of the DAR in Timonium, Maryland.
