The Wistar Institute welcomed Pennsylvania State Senator Sharif Street for a tour to learn about our latest biomedical research advances and our innovative workforce development and training programs.

During his visit, Senator Street toured Dr. David Weiner’s lab, where research assistant professor Dr. Ebony Gary discussed her work on a DNA-based GLP-1 therapy. He also visited Dr. Katherine Aird’s lab to learn about her recent research examining the link between fructose and the spread of ovarian cancer.

We’re excited to welcome Brian Fuglestad, Ph.D., to The Wistar Institute!

Dr. Fuglestad, who joins as an associate professor in the Center for Advanced Therapeutics (CAT), studies a unique and little understood type of protein that can switch roles inside the cell. These dual-mode proteins, known as peripheral membrane proteins, are an untapped space for drug discovery and could be used for new types of cancer treatment and beyond.

Could spider venom offer clues for treating stroke, neuropathic pain, or substance use disorders?

Wistar’s Dr. Joe Salvino, a medicinal chemist and professor in the Molecular & Cellular Oncogenesis Program, believes a synthetic version of a naturally occurring compound found in spider venom could provide a starting point for developing life-changing medicines.
