The Trauma Center at Penn Established in 1987, Trauma, Surgical Critical Care, and Emergency Surgery provide lifesaving surgic Luke's Hospital in Bethlehem, PA.

Our page describes the activities of the Division of Trauma, Surgical Critical Care, and Emergency Surgical Services available within the Penn Medicine network. The PennSTAR Critical Care Transport program supports the mission of the Division of Trauma, Surgical Critical Care, and Emergency Surgical Services

The Trauma Center at Penn was established in 1988 as an accredited Level I Regional Resource Trauma Center serving the population locally here in West Philadelphia, as well as throughout the Philadelphia metropolitan area, through our PennSTAR Flight program. The Trauma Center at Penn has long been considered a national and international model of excellence in trauma and surgical critical care. All of the trauma surgeons are fellowship trained in trauma care and specialize in complex and high-acuity, multi-system trauma. With round the clock support from in-house trauma surgeons and emergency medicine physicians, as well as the dedicated support from the members of the departments of anesthesia, orthopedics, neurosurgery, plastics, ENT, OMF, ophthalmology, vascular, cardiothoracic and physical medicine and rehabilitation, as well as our trauma nurses and allied health partners, the Division of Trauma, Surgical Critical Care and Emergency Surgery at Penn Medicine is able to offer our patients the most advanced specialty care in the region. In addition to the flagship Trauma Program at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, Penn Trauma provides clinical and administrative support to our affiliated trauma programs at Reading Hospital and Medical Center in Reading, PA and St. Surgical Critical Care (SCC) focuses on the care of patients with complex surgical needs, most frequently intra-abdominal pathologies. Surgical Critical Care practices a multidisciplinary approach to the treatment of these patients, with both surgical and anesthesia intensivists, Critical Care Nurse Practitioners, Critical Care Fellows, residents from a variety of specialties, critical care nurses, pharmacists, respiratory therapists, clinical nutritionists, and others to name a few, all participating as members of the treatment team. Emergency Surgical Services (ESS) offers in-house coverage by an attending surgeon with expedient operating room availability 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Expertise and vast experience in managing acute surgical emergencies include, but are not limited to; abdominal catastrophes secondary to bowel perforation, obstruction or fistulization, abdominal compartment syndrome, severe necrotizing soft tissue infections, and biliary obstruction. We cater to the highly complex general and emergency surgical issues that could overwhelm a community hospital’s human and technical resources. The PennSTAR Critical Care Transport program provides both air and ground transport of critically ill or injured patients. With a fleet of 6 helicopters strategically located throughout the metropolitan Philadelphia and South Jersey regions, patients are never more than 20 minutes from a PennSTAR helicopter. The helicopters provide on-scene response for traumatic injuries, as well as performing inter-facility transports of patients with complex medical, surgical, or traumatic pathologies. Ground critical care ambulances are available for inter-facility transfer of patients located nearer to a Penn Medicine facility or when weather prohibits flight. The helicopter and ambulance crews each consist of critical nurses and paramedics with extensive experience in critical care transport medicine.

Today is World Trauma Day. It started in 2011 to cut deaths from car crashes and other serious injuries. Two things save lives: preventing the injury, and getting to the right hospital fast.

That is what a trauma center is for. A Level 1 trauma center has every tool and expert needed to treat any severe injury, 24 hours a day. At Penn Trauma, a patient can go from our helipad to a trauma bay in just over 1 minute. Our patient outcomes rank well above national averages.

Three things you can do today:

Buckle up every ride, every seat.
Put your phone down while driving.
Call 911 for a bad injury. Do not drive the person yourself. EMS takes them straight to a trauma center.

πŸ’™ Our emergency nurses are the first to reach our patients when they arrive, and our trauma team can’t do this work without them.

It’s Emergency Nurses Week. When a patient is hurting, scared, and every second counts, our Penn Presbyterian emergency nurses are at the bedside assessing, stabilizing, and comforting, often while supporting a worried family at the same time. Everything our trauma team does next builds on what they start.

To our emergency nurses: thank you. We’re proud to work beside you. πŸ’™

Staying active is one of the best things you can do for your body as you age, and it doesn't have to mean the gym.

It's Active Aging Week, and Tai Chi is one of the gentlest, most effective ways to keep moving. Its slow, flowing movements build strength, balance, and steadiness, the things that keep you independent and doing what you love for years to come.

The best part: you can start right from home, at your own pace, for free. Penn Trauma offers a free virtual Tai Chi program you can follow anytime.

Some people are so good at being okay for everyone else that no one thinks to check on them.

Today is World Mental Health Day. Think of the person in your life who always holds it together, the one who shows up, who listens, who everyone leans on. They may be carrying more than they let on, precisely because they're the strong one.

Reach out to them. A real "how are you, actually?" can matter more than you know.

And if you're the one everyone leans on: you're allowed to need support too. 988 is there any time, for any reason. You don't have to be in crisis to reach out.

Nearly half of all eye injuries happen at home, not on a job site. And 90% of them could be prevented with the right eye protection.

It's World Sight Day, a good reminder that your eyes need protection for the everyday stuff, not just construction work. The common culprits:
πŸ”§ Power tools, drilling, sanding, grinding
🌳 Yard work, mowing, trimming, anything that flings debris
πŸ§ͺ Cleaning chemicals like bleach and oven cleaner

A pair of safety glasses or goggles costs a few dollars and takes two seconds to put on. Your vision doesn't grow back.

Keep a pair where you do the work, in the garage, under the sink, with the yard tools, so they're there when you need them.

A working smoke alarm is the warning that gets your family out in time.

The worst fires we see are the ones with no warning. People wake to smoke with the way out already gone, and jump from windows to escape, reaching us with broken bones and burns. A smoke alarm is often what makes the difference, those few seconds to wake up and get everyone out the door.

So this week, check yours. Press the button. Replace the batteries if it's been a while.

No alarm, or it's not working? Philadelphia homeowners can call 311 and the Fire Department will install them free. Renters, your landlord is required to provide them, and 311 takes those reports too.

Five minutes today. It matters more than almost anything else you can do at home.

πŸ’œ October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

Domestic violence is far more common than most people realize. More than 1 in 3 women and more than 1 in 6 men experience physical violence, sexual violence, or stalking by a partner in their lifetime. It crosses every neighborhood, income, and background.

And it rarely starts with violence. Abuse often begins quietly, with control, pressure, and blame, and grows over time. That's what makes the early warning signs so important to recognize, in your own relationship or in someone you love.

If any of this feels familiar, you are not alone, and help is close to home. The Philadelphia Domestic Violence Hotline is free, confidential, and available 24/7 at 1-866-723-3014. Trained counselors can help with safety planning, emergency housing, and local support, in multiple languages.

You deserve a relationship that feels safe.

πŸ”’ Talk to your kids about guns. Then don't rely on the talk alone.

If your children ever see a gun, teach them three simple steps:
1️⃣ Don't touch it
2️⃣ Move away from it
3️⃣ Tell a grownup right away

It's a good conversation to have, and worth having more than once. But here's the honest truth: you can't count on a child to remember those steps in the moment, and you definitely can't count on their friends to. Curiosity is powerful, and kids are fast.

That's why safe storage matters more than any conversation. A fi***rm that is locked, unloaded, and stored separately from its am******on is one a child cannot use, no matter what happens when you're not in the room.

Teach the steps. Store it safely. Both keep kids alive.

Check the comments for more safe storage tips and to find out how to get a free gun safe.

πŸš— It's Seat Check Saturday.

Here's something most parents don't know: about half of all car seats are installed incorrectly, even when parents are sure they got it right. A seat that isn't installed properly can't fully protect your child in a crash.

The good news is that a correctly used car seat is one of the most powerful protections there is. It cuts a child's risk of dying in a crash by more than half.

So make this the weekend you check:
βœ… Use the right seat for your child's age, height, and weight
βœ… Follow two manuals: your vehicle's manual shows where to anchor a seat in your car, and the car seat's manual shows how to install that seat correctly
βœ… Make sure it's tightly installed, with less than an inch of movement, and the harness snug

Still not sure it's right? A certified car seat technician can check it for you, many offer free fittings. It's worth the peace of mind.

πŸ’Š Today is World Pharmacists Day, and we want to recognize the pharmacists who are right here with us, on the unit, every day.

Our unit-based pharmacists are part of the team in a way many people never see. They round with us, adjust medications in real time, manage complex pain and anticoagulation needs, catch interactions before they become problems, and make sure the right drug is ready at the right moment when a patient is at their most critical.

Their expertise makes our patients safer. Quietly, constantly, and often behind the scenes.

To our pharmacists: thank you for everything you do for our patients and our team. πŸ’™
