It was formed in response to the work of the Philadelphia Coalition that recognized the disconnect between the civil rights generation and the post civil rights generation. The idea was to develop a program that would provide our young leaders with the knowledge to make intelligent and informed decisions that lead to positive and sustainable change. Our Mission:
Neshoba Youth Coalition’s mission i
s to develop academic skills, behaviors, and attitudes in academically motivated teens to improve their grades, standardized test scores, attendance, and opportunities. Our purpose is to contribute to the healing of the Philadelphia community by uplifting its most vulnerable students. The need for the project rose from discussions among the members of the Philadelphia Coalition about the problems Philadelphia youth were having in school and in the community, so the focus is on empowering these students to succeed in school and life. The program teaches the youth through the lenses of history, past and present, to ask critical questions concerning what has happened in the past, what were the conditions or environment that allowed these things to happen and how do we develop strategies that prevent these things from happening again.
