“Why don’t people experiencing domestic violence just leave?” Well, if it was easy, many survivors would!
There isn’t one reason why someone stays in an abusive relationship. Addressing barriers to employment, housing, childcare, immigration and more make it easier for survivors to seek help and get out if they want to.

Even though it may seem like the right thing, NEVER push a survivor to do something they don't feel ready for. Leaving is complicated and is a process rather than a one-time event. Often, abusive partners escalate their behaviors when they suspect a survivor wants to leave or just after they have separated. If someone you know is in an abusive relationship, do not judge them. If they want to, connect them to resources like the Philadelphia Domestic Violence Hotline (866-723-3014) for assistance making a safety plan for any stage of their relationship.

“Philly Joy Bank gave me that support. They gave me that comfort to know, ‘all right, I'm not flat broke. I still got a little something,’” she said. "That took away from times of feeling anxious, and it gave me a sense to be able to connect with her on a whole different level."

Wonderful photos and coverage of via CNN.

Philly Joy Bank gives expectant mothers in Philadelphia neighborhoods with high infant mortality rates $1,000 a month. One mom says it brought relief from constantly thinking about “survival.”

Are there other red flags you think are important to share?
