As temperatures rise, many families/providers notice something concerning:

Older adults naturally have a reduced sense of thirst. Many drink less than 1.5 liters per day-even when fluids are available. For someone with dementia, remembering to drink (or even recognizing thirst) can be even harder.

And dehydration doesn’t just cause fatigue.

It can contribute to:
• Increased confusion
• Behavioral changes
• Higher fall risk
• Urinary tract infections (UTIs)
• Hospitalization

A published quality improvement study in BMJ Open Quality found that improving hydration in care home residents led to:
✔ 58% reduction in UTIs requiring antibiotics
✔ 36% reduction in UTI-related hospital admissions

UTIs are one of the most common triggers of sudden agitation and behavioral changes in people with dementia. Preventing dehydration may help reduce that risk.
