Starting tomorrow, 02/23/2026, through 03/06/2026, the Phillips County Sheriff's Office will be participating in a special seatbelt enforcement program hosted by the Kansas Department of Transportation and SAFE (Seatbelts Are For Everyone).

This 2 week program's focus will be on teen drivers and their passengers. What does this mean? Deputies will be increasing their patrols in the areas around our high schools immediately before and after school. Of course the primary purpose of this program is educating and ensuring the proper use of seatbelts, but, we will also be placing an emphasis on overall safer driving in general.

Our goal with the office's participation in this special enforcement is to bring a proactive approach towards establishing safe driving habits with the younger drivers in our communities. We want nothing more than to see them, and their passengers, safely reach their destination every time they get behind the wheel!

Press Release – Phillips County Sheriff’s Office

On February 19, 2026, the Phillips County Sheriff’s Office received multiple calls reporting a 37-year-old male making statements and live-streaming from a location where he did not have permission to be. The property owner requested that the individual be removed.

Deputies located the individual and observed him discharging fireworks toward the street. No vehicle damage has been reported at this time.

The individual was taken into custody. During the arrest and transport process, the individual physically resisted, made threats toward law enforcement, struck a deputy with his leg, spit, and head-butted another deputy. While being repositioned for transport, the individual bit a deputy, breaking the skin.

The individual was transported to the Phillips County Jail and placed in secure holding pending further evaluation.

The injured deputy was treated at the hospital for minor injuries and released, with follow-up care scheduled.

Formal charges are pending review by the Phillips County Attorney’s Office. As with all cases, the individual is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Community Support
During today’s incident on Main Street, several members of the public stopped to check on our deputies and asked if assistance was needed.
We want the community to know that we genuinely appreciate that support. Public safety is a shared responsibility, and it means a great deal to our office when citizens show concern for the safety of our deputies, neighbors, and the community as a whole.
Thank you for continuing to stand behind the deputies and staff of the Phillips County Sheriff’s Office.

Last week, on January 2nd, the Sheriff's Office wrapped up the "Taking Down DUI" special traffic enforcement campaign. We would like to take a moment to recap, and provide a summary of the Deputies' hard work put forth to keep our roads safer!

Total Traffic stops: 83

Total Infractions/Hazards/Crimes Addressed: 84

DUI Arrests: 1

Transporting Open Container: 1

Misdemeanor Traffic Offenses: 8

Speeding: 63 👀 (PLEASE slow down folks)

Hazardous Moving Violation: 1

Other Traffic Infractions: 10

Additionally, as indicated in our previous post, while not a tracked statistic for the campaign, the Sheriff's Office assisted multiple agencies in bringing a safe outcome to the high speed pursuit that traveled through the county during this special enforcement period. 🚗💭 🚓🚓🚓

In conclusion, it is important to note that not all traffic stops recorded resulted in tickets being issued. Education is a key component of these campaigns, with the end goal of safer roadways for us all!

At approximately 2:45 p.m., the Phillips County Sheriff’s Office assisted in a vehicle pursuit that began in Smith County. The pursuit continued into Rooks County, where a Rooks County Sheriff’s Deputy successfully deployed spike strips, bringing the vehicle to a controlled stop.

With the vehicle disabled, the male driver—identified as being from Pennsylvania—was given clear commands and taken into custody without incident. No injuries were reported.

Area agencies maintained communication throughout the incident, and the Kansas Highway Patrol, Smith County Sheriff’s Office, Rooks County Sheriff’s Office, and Phillips County Sheriff’s Office coordinated to ensure the pursuit was resolved safely and efficiently.

Merry Christmas everyone! Hopefully the big guy's lead reindeer had his nose charged up to navigate that fog last night and he made it safely to your house🎅!

Speaking of safe travels, starting tomorrow 12/26/2025 through 01/02/2026, your Phillips County Deputies will be participating in the Taking Down DUI campaign. Our participation in this statewide campaign promoting sober driving means you will see a higher than normal presence of law enforcement on the roads and highways across the county. Especially on New Years Eve, which is unfortunately one of the deadliest days a year for drunk driving.

🎉Being a responsible driver is simple🎉

- Plan ahead, arrange for a safe ride home before the party.

- If someone has been drinking and plans to drive, take their keys. Don't be afraid to be a good friend. Help them find a safe ride home. Not all heroes wear capes🦸‍♂️

- If you see a possible impaired driver on the road, contact law enforcement 📱🚓

Remember, buzzed driving is drunk driving!

Take your time if you need to be out and about this morning! Most surfaces and roadways in the county are glazed over with ice. Be extra cautious around bridges and aware that black ice has been observed.

Remember if you have questions about the road conditions, www.kandrive.gov is an excellent resource!

As a follow-up post to the Office's participation in the Thanksgiving STEP Campaign, Deputies compiled the following stats during the campaign period:

43 Traffic Stops
46 Traffic Violations/Hazards addressed

As stated with our original post, the mission for the campaign was to educate and stress the importance of seatbelt use and overall safe driving. Keeping that in mind, deputies worked 4 traffic accidents during the reporting time frame (3 of which were with animals 🦌) and proper seatbelt use was reported with all 4. None of these accidents resulted in injuries that required medical attention; likely a direct result of the use of seatbelts by all involved!

As the most wonderful time of year continues getting into full swing, just remember what generally comes with it; increased animal movement (see above for confirmation) and 🌨️ covered roads. Additional, obligatory, PSA: Cruise control is not your friend on ice/snow covered roads!! So please take the extra second to put your seatbelt on, be mindful of our wonderful Kansas weather and focus on the road so you arrive at your destinations safely!
