SQUAD HISTORY

The idea of an Emergency Squad for Phillipsburg was born in an automobile between Washington and Phillipsburg on an evening in 1936. The four men in the automobile were Ira Snyder, Alfred Bates, Lewis Silverthorn and Charles Shappel, Jr., who was to serve as squad captain for twenty-seven years. The group was returning from a demonstration put on by the Washington Fire Department F

irst Aid and Rescue Squad at the Washington Boro Hall, The event had been arranged by Vernon "Bab" Oakes, captain of that squad and a former fire chief. The Phillipsburg Squad was never a part of the fire or police departments, but its original membership was drawn from those departments. Included were two firemen from each of the six fire companies and two policeman. Later the membership was increased to sixteen, and still later to thirty-five. In its early days the firehouse of the Lincoln Engine Co. was it headquarters. The membership again was increased in 1979, this time to fifty. At the end of the year, eight of the additional openings were filled, four of them by the Squad's first women members. A Junior membership was instituted in 1974 and now has an enrollment of eight. The Squad responds to more calls than any other in the County. Reports show that 2065 calls were answered in 2004. Groups of volunteers sleep at headquarters to answer night calls more quickly.

Phillipsburg Emergency Squad Rescue Services Division Heavy Vehicle Rescue Training

Members of the Phillipsburg Emergency Squad (PES) Rescue Services Division successfully completed Day One of a two day specialized training program focused on underride motor vehicle collisions, hosted in partnership with Superior Towing of Hunterdon County.

An underride collision occurs when a passenger vehicle becomes lodged beneath a larger commercial vehicle, such as a tractor trailer. These incidents present significant technical rescue challenges and often require specialized equipment and coordinated operations to safely access and extricate trapped occupants.

In many cases, the commercial vehicle must be carefully lifted to allow rescuers access to the passenger compartment. Heavy duty towing and recovery companies, such as Superior Towing, utilize specialized rotator wreckers capable of safely lifting these large vehicles. As the vehicle is raised, rescue personnel must simultaneously stabilize the load using specialized equipment to prevent any movement or collapse in the unlikely event of a mechanical failure.

During today’s training, PES Rescue personnel focused on the proper deployment and application of our Paratech stabilization strut system, learning the fundamental techniques necessary to safely stabilize heavy vehicles in preparation for tomorrow’s full scale rescue scenarios.

We commend all of our members who dedicated their time to expanding their knowledge and enhancing their technical rescue capabilities. Continuous training ensures our team remains prepared to provide the highest level of service to the communities we protect.

🚑 EVOC Training Complete – Day 2 🚑

Today, members of the Phillipsburg Emergency Squad successfully completed Day 2 of the Emergency Vehicle Operator Course (EVOC), focusing on the hands-on emergency vehicle driving portion of the program.

Operating an ambulance under emergency conditions requires far more than simply driving with lights and sirens. It demands sound judgment, vehicle control, situational awareness, and the discipline to make safe decisions under pressure. Today’s practical exercises challenged our members to sharpen those critical skills in a controlled training environment.

At Phillipsburg Emergency Squad, we are committed to continuous training and professional development because the safety of our patients, our crews, and the communities we serve depends on it.

🚑 Emergency Vehicle Operations Course (EVOC) Training 🚑

Today, our instructors conducted the classroom portion of the Emergency Vehicle Operations Course (EVOC).

This important training provides our personnel with the knowledge and foundation necessary to safely and responsibly operate emergency vehicles during both routine and emergency operations.

Today’s classroom instruction covered emergency vehicle safety, defensive driving, vehicle dynamics, situational awareness, emergency response procedures, and the responsibilities associated with operating an emergency vehicle.
