***South Main Street Bridge Repair Update***

Through constant communication from Mayor Randy S. Piazza Jr.’s office and staff, along with the diligent work of Senator Doug Steinhardt, New Jersey Department of Transportation Commissioner Priya Jain, Chris Cotty, and Chesapeake & Delaware Railroad, everyone involved has worked together to pull the necessary resources into place so repair work can begin next week, possibly as early as Monday.

South Main Street Bridge Repair Update:

We know the closure of the South Main Street Bridge has created significant challenges for residents, businesses, emergency services, and commuters, and we appreciate everyone’s patience.

NJDOT has completed draft repair and traffic control plans, and the steel needed for repairs is expected to arrive within the next two weeks. One of the remaining hurdles involved obtaining specialized railroad safety equipment known as derailers, which are required before work can proceed over the active rail line.

Through the assistance of Senator Steinhardt and the cooperation of Chesapeake & Delaware Railroad, operators of the Wine Train and Polar Express, the necessary derailers have been secured and are scheduled for delivery tomorrow. This development advances the project timeline by several weeks compared to the original estimate.

Once installed, NJDOT’s contractor can complete final testing and begin repairs. Work is now expected to start next week.

We will continue pushing for urgency and accountability while ensuring the work is completed safely and correctly.
