Benton County Sheriff’s Office investigates fatal traffic crash on Highway 223

On May 9, 2026, at approximately 10:25 a.m., deputies with the Benton County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO) responded to a single-vehicle crash on Highway 223 between the communities of Wren and Kings Valley.

The driver and sole occupant of a 1987 Ford Ranger, Tyler Allen Smouse, 18, of Philomath, was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Preliminary investigation indicates the vehicle left the roadway for an unknown reason and rolled over. The crash remains under investigation by the BCSO Crash Team.

“This is a heartbreaking loss for a family and a close-knit community,” said Sheriff Van Arsdall. “Our thoughts are with Tyler’s loved ones as they navigate this unimaginable tragedy.”

Highway 223 was closed for approximately three and a half hours during the investigation and roadway cleanup.

The Benton County Sheriff’s Office asks anyone who witnessed the crash or has information related to the incident to contact the investigating deputy at [email protected].

BCSO thanks Philomath Fire & Rescue, Hoskins-Kings Valley Rural Fire Protection District , Oregon Department of Transportation, Corvallis Regional Communications Center, and Willamette Valley First Responder Chaplains for their assistance during the response.

Your HKV volunteers responded to assist Corvallis Fire with a fall victim at Beazell Memorial Forest this afternoon. The patient was about 1 mile up the trail requiring the use of Philomath Fire & Rescue’s wheeled litter to transport them back to the parking lot, where the patient was taken to the hospital by a Corvallis Fire ambulance.
It’s partnerships like this that count when the rubber hits the road. Incidents like this require a lot of hands to make things go smoothly.

We are super excited and grateful to have been awarded the wildfire season staffing grant from the Oregon State Fire Marshal’s Office for another year.

This grant funding allows us to pay our members to staff the fire station during peak hours, reducing response time and therefore damage and risk from fires.

In addition to call response, personnel use this time to train, maintain equipment and the station, and patrol our area.

More trainings at HKV!

Our volunteers had the incredible opportunity to participate in some fun and engaging exercises recently, showcasing their commitment and dedication to serving our community.

1- A huge thank you to Polk County Fire District No.1 for inviting us to join a cooperative scenario day with OHSU’s nursing program at WOU. Two of our newest EMT-Firefighters were able to practice patient care from arrival on scene to transport and arrival at the mock Emergency Department.

2- EMS skills night! HKVFD is proud to have staff ranging from first aid/CPR to paramedic level training. As part of our EMS continuing education, we practice our patient care and assessment skills including getting vital signs, cardiac arrest management, spinal precautions, ventilation and airway care; it’s amazing to see our volunteers grow and improve.

3- Tonight we continued our vehicle stabilization and extrication training, made possible through a generous grant from Siletz Tribal Charitable Contribution Fund, donation of equipment from Adair Rural Fire & Rescue, and donated cars from local community members. Our members will have completed their state certification for passenger vehicle rescue operations by the end of this class!

We thank our community and partner agencies for their unwavering support!

Your HKV volunteers responded to a call for help from a neighbor early this morning for an electrical fire.
Fortunately, the homeowners were able to extinguish the fire before our arrival and no one was injured.

Who wouldn’t want the chance to use a giant can opener on a car?!

Sunday our volunteers trained on vehicle rescue techniques. We were able to do this thanks to a generous donation of rescue and safety equipment from Siletz Tribal Charitable Contribution Fund and Adair Rural Fire & Rescue.

Our very own community donated an old van and Geo for us to practice on behind the fire
station.

We received a grant from Siletz Tribal Charitable Contribution Fund for rescue struts (the red things that keep an unstable car from tipping over) and warning signs to keep our responders safe while they’re working.

This training and equipment will significantly improve our ability to stabilize and the help victims of a vehicle crash in our area.
