School is back in session, which means more kids are walking, biking, and crossing streets throughout our community. Please slow down, stay alert, and watch carefully for kids who may not always be predictable.

We've had some concerns with vehicles not being safe in intersections, even with crossing guards present.
Please keep in mind when approaching an intersection with a crossing guard:
Slow down and be prepared to stop
Stop when directed by the crossing guard
Remain stopped until the crossing guard has safely cleared the roadway and it is safe to proceed
Watch for children who may enter the crosswalk from either direction

A few extra seconds of patience can make a huge difference. Let's help our kids get to and from school safely!

We are so grateful to all of our citizens, sponsors, and chili cookoff participants for making it such a great event.

We may not have taken home a trophy this year.. but we are already planning our comeback!

The Philomath Police Department, in partnership with the Benton County Sheriff's Office and the City of Corvallis Police Department, will be performing crosswalk safety operations on September 30th. The goal is to improve safety and community livability through education and enforcement of crosswalk laws. In 2024, 752 pedestrians in Oregon were injured in traffic crashes, and 97 were killed.

The Philomath Police Department is dedicated to enhancing traffic safety. As a reminder, safety and courtesy go hand in hand for crosswalks. Drivers and pedestrians are encouraged to be alert for the right-of-way issues that affect them both.

Pedestrian safety tips:

• Follow the rules of the road and obey signs and signals.
• Walk on sidewalks whenever they are available.
• If there is no sidewalk, walk facing traffic and as far from traffic as possible.
• Cross streets at crosswalks or intersections. Look for cars in all directions, including those turning left or right.
• If a crosswalk or intersection is not available, locate a well-lit area where you have the best view of traffic. Wait for a gap in traffic that allows enough time to cross safely; continue watching for traffic as you cross.
• Watch for cars entering or exiting driveways, or backing up in parking lots.

Driver safety tips:

• Look out for pedestrians everywhere, at all times.
• Use extra caution when driving in hard-to-see conditions, such as nighttime or bad weather.
• Slow down and be prepared to stop when turning or otherwise entering a crosswalk.
• Yield to pedestrians in crosswalks and stop well back from the crosswalk to give other vehicles an opportunity to see the crossing pedestrians so they can stop too.
• Never pass vehicles stopped at a crosswalk. There may be people crossing where you can’t see.
• Never drive under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs.
• Follow the speed limit, especially around people on the street, in school zones and in neighborhoods where children are present.
• Be extra cautious when backing up and look for pedestrians.
