Today, we’re remembering a true champion of children, learning and possibility: Dolly Parton. 💗📚

While the world knew her for her music, Dolly’s legacy reaches far beyond the stage. Through Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, millions of children have received free, age-appropriate books - helping spark a love of reading and giving young minds the opportunity to dream big.

For more than 15 years, United Way and the Imagination Library have shared a commitment to putting books in the hands of children and building brighter futures through literacy.

At Valley of the Sun United Way, we’re proud to carry that same spirit forward through our commitment to early literacy and our Literacy Hubs.

Dolly reminded us that sometimes, something as simple as a book can plant the seed for a lifelong dream.

Her legacy will live on every time a child opens a book. 💕📖

Our VSUW team recently packed Family Tales & Reading Trails kits, filled with resources designed to help families make reading part of everyday life.

And this is just the beginning. We’ve got some exciting things in store for our Literacy Hubs this year - including the possibility of welcoming something NEW to the Valley! 🥳

Our Loaned Executive program brings talented professionals from local companies onto the Valley of the Sun United Way team for a season - sharing their expertise, building connections and helping move our community impact work forward.

A behind-the-scenes look at something we’re incredibly excited to share. 🎥

Valley of the Sun United Way was selected as the first local United Way featured in a larger-scale production highlighting disaster preparedness, as part of United Way Worldwide’s United We Prepare with Verizon initiative.

During production, we had the opportunity to showcase how preparedness becomes real impact when a community works together.

☀️ 2,000 heat relief kits packed alongside community members and corporate partners such as Arizona Public Service - APS
🤝 Supplies distributed directly to community members at Keys to Change - connecting people experiencing homelessness with resources and pathways toward stability
❤️ Visiting Justa Center - our partners providing day resources, support and connection to services for older adults experiencing homelessness
🌱 Visiting Unlimited Potential AZ - our partner organization that advances health and education equity through community-based programs that strengthen families and neighborhoods.

This work is bigger than any one organization. Valley of the Sun United Way serves as a connector, bringing businesses, nonprofits, volunteers and community partners together around the needs facing our community.

There’s nothing quite like getting the United Way network together in one room. 💙

Our Valley of the Sun United Way team had an incredible time at the United Way Worldwide Western Regional Conference in Portland, Oregon - connecting with colleagues from across the country, learning from leaders and partners throughout the network, sharing ideas and bringing new inspiration back to Phoenix.

And we’re especially proud that our very own Mohana Holloway and Bailey De La Torre took the stage to represent VSUW as selected presenters for “People First, Impact Always: How to Leverage Social Media for Authentic Brand Growth.”

Their session brought United Way communicators together for hands-on collaboration, including breakout activities where attendees created social media content with one another.

We’re grateful for the opportunity to learn, lead and connect alongside our United Way family. Thank you to the United Ways of California and United Way of the Columbia-Willamette for hosting us!

We did it!

Our final United for Heat Relief kit build brought together an incredible crew to build 2,000 more heat relief kits - bringing our total to 8,000! 🎉

And the best part? We reached our goal ahead of schedule and directly delievered these kits to Keys to Change.

This work is part of United Way Worldwide and Verizon's United We Prepare initiative, bringing people and resources together to help our community prepare for extreme heat and other disasters. 💪 👏

💙 A huge THANK YOU to our corporate partners, including Arizona Public Service - APS and Nationwide, whose support and volunteerism helped make these kits possible.

And, we're not done yet.

This is just the beginning of what we're building through United We Prepare. With National Preparedness Month around the corner, stay tuned for more ways we're working together to build a safer, more prepared Arizona.

Through our Pathways to Economic Opportunity, participants receive wraparound support designed to help them succeed in school, training programs, and careers -from supplies to mentorship and resources that remove barriers along the way.

Those words came from a handwritten thank-you letter written by a fifth-grade student who received one of our Pantry Packs.

It's a simple reminder that every volunteer, donor and supporter makes a real difference. Every pack is a message to a child that their community cares.
