DDRO members recently received training on an interactive educational trailer that helps parents and guardians recognize potential warning signs of substance use and understand some of the common places risky items may be hidden in everyday teen environments.

The training focused on prevention, awareness, and building healthy communication with youth by helping families identify concerning behaviors, understand current substance trends, and learn ways to start supportive conversations early. Through continued education and outreach, DDRO remains committed to helping protect and empower Arizona’s youth and communities.

The DDRO team came together for a statewide training day, uniting our North and South teams to strengthen the impact we make in schools and communities every day.

From Phoenix to Tucson and everywhere in between, DDRO outreach specialists work year-round to educate, mentor and empower Arizona youth to make healthy, drug-free choices.

What role does physical activity play in substance use prevention?

DDRO recently introduced the GRIT (Gained Resilience in Teens) program at Glendale High School, a substance use prevention curriculum that combines physical activity, mental health awareness, and healthy decision-making to help students build resilience and stay substance free.

Research shows teens who stay physically active are less likely to engage in substance misuse while improving confidence, stress management, and overall wellbeing.

Meet the Team: Staff Sgt. Ramirez-Torres

Staff Sgt. Ramirez-Torres has been with the task force for years and remains driven by one goal: making a real difference in the community. Her passion comes from wanting to connect on a more personal level and help people where they are.
What she values most about DDRO is the ability to reach a wide range of communities. No matter the need, the team shows up ready to support, educate, and adapt.
When it comes to students, her message goes beyond just substance awareness. She wants them to learn about themselves. Whether it’s building resilience, developing refusal skills, or making healthier choices, her goal is to leave them with tools they can carry forward.
She also emphasizes the importance of understanding peer pressure and the real risks that can come with it, even in a single moment. Her focus is on helping students think long-term and make decisions that protect their future.

DDRO recently partnered with Redeem Neighborhoods and the Laveen Coalition at Carl Hayden Community High School to bring students an engaging, hands-on substance awareness event.

Students rotated through interactive prevention stations, gaining real-world knowledge and resources on the risks of underage drinking, va**ng, and other substances. Events like this help empower students with the information they need to make informed, healthy choices and build a stronger, more resilient community.

DDRO partnered with the Drug Enforcement Administration and the Rise Up Glendale Coalition for a Pre-Prom Safety Day at West Point High School, engaging students on the risks of counterfeit pills, fentanyl, and substance misuse.

Through interactive discussions, students gained real-world insight to help them make informed, healthy choices. Events like this highlight the power of early education and strong partnerships, equipping students with the knowledge to make informed, healthy choices while empowering the next generation through prevention and awareness.

More than 130 middle school students came together in Buckeye on Friday for the Way Out West Coalition’s Youth 4 Youth end-of-year conference. Students from across the Buckeye Elementary School District spent the day celebrating the work they’ve put in all year.
Through the Youth 4 Youth program, these 6th–8th graders took the lead on real issues affecting their schools. They assessed the needs of their schools to identify challenges like drug misuse, bullying, and va**ng, and turned those insights into peer-led presentations designed to make an impact.
Our DDRO team was proud to support this effort from start to finish by helping with planning, implementation, curriculum delivery, and mentorship along the way.
This is what prevention looks like when students are empowered to lead.

Metro Phoenix Partners in Prevention partnered with DDRO to deliver the SPORT Prevention Plus Wellness (PPW) program at Hope High School.

Hope High School’s focus on providing a supportive, alternative learning environment made it an ideal setting to engage students in meaningful conversations about health, decision-making, and long-term success.

Through this evidence-based program, students explored how everyday choices, like staying active, managing stress, and getting enough sleep, can support their wellbeing, while also learning about the real risks of substance use.

Together, we’re empowering youth to build resilience and choose a healthy, drug-free future.

Meet the Team: Staff Sgt. Escorcia

Staff Sgt. Escorcia, known as “Esco,” has been part of the Task Force for nearly three years. What drew him to the mission was simple, the impact. He believes in building stronger communities and helping youth navigate the realities of substance misuse.

For Escorcia, the most meaningful part of the job is connection. Whether he’s working with coalition leaders or speaking directly with students, he values real conversations. He shares his own experiences and creates space for young people to share theirs, building trust and understanding in the process.

His message to youth is grounded and honest: slow down and enjoy being a kid. With so many pressures and temptations, he encourages students to put themselves first, make healthy choices, and take time to grow.

“It’s rewarding to see that what we do actually makes a difference where we live.”

DDRO Civil Operators recently visited Kino Junior High School to deliver the THRIVE presentation, Lesson 5: Risks and Choices.

During the session, students explored how everyday decisions can shape their future, especially when it comes to substance use. The lesson focused on understanding risk, recognizing consequences, and building the confidence to make informed, healthy choices.

By engaging students in real-world scenarios and open discussion, DDRO continues to empower youth with the knowledge and skills they need to navigate challenges and choose a path toward a healthier future.
