Lazy L Pool

Above-Ground Pools

Generally the most economical option, above-ground pools sit on the surface of your yard, sometimes with a deck or patio surrounding them. Most above-ground pools are constructed with aluminum, resin, or steel sidings and vinyl liners. Patterned walls are available.

You can often assemble and dismantle this type of pool with relative ease as a DIY project, or many retailers offer delivery and installation. Above-ground pools are also suitable for yards with limited access. They arrive in pieces that can easily be carried to the site for assembly.

Kiddie Pool

At the very lowest end of the "Can I Afford a Pool?" scale is the easy-to-find portable kiddie pool, which can be either an inflatable device or a rigid plastic shell. Either way, these pools can be pulled out of storage whenever hot weather arrives and the kids need a place to cool off, then put back into storage at the end of the season. Just make sure you drain the pool after each use (water the lawn), and keep an alert eye on the kiddies at all times—even very shallow pools can be hazardous to unsupervised kids.

Above-Ground Swimming Pool

Above-ground pools serve as a symbol of attainable pool ownership. They can also be a good option for cold-winter climates where maintaining an in-ground pool for the winter can be difficult. There are both hard-sided and soft-sided options in this style, and some pools are almost indistinguishable from much more expensive in-ground pools, especially if you add an elevated deck or frame around the outside of the pool. In many climates, though, in-ground pools are drained, disassembled, and put away in seasons where they aren't needed. In this case, soft-sided above-ground pools are an excellent choice.

Sail great lengths at San Alfonso Del Mar, Chile

Unusual and unrivalled in its size, the pool at San Alfonso Del Mar is the largest outdoor swimming pool in the world. It’s around 1,000 metres long (20 times the size of an Olympic pool) and around 35 metres deep, which also makes it the world’s deepest swimming pool to boot. Built along the Chilean coastline, the pool pulls in water from the sea, which is controlled and filtered via its own system. Navigate from one side to the other in one of the pool’s small sailboats and canoes, before anchoring up at the other end and heading down to the beach for an early evening stroll.
