We are heartbroken by the loss of this beautiful human.

Repost from

Part of “There Is No ‘They’: A Document of Homelessness”

I met Julien early on in my project documenting homelessness in the Valley. He was doing community outreach with Sonoran Prevention Works at University Park just north of the Zone. I was immediately drawn to his warmth, kindness, & vulnerability. I formally interviewed him in March 2023. He graciously sat for a portrait session with me two months later. I revisited my interview with and portraits of Julien over the last 24 hours. The following is Julien reflecting on his personal experiences with homelessness and addiction and the shame, guilt, and feeling of not belonging that all-too-often accompany them.

“We've created an environment [and a] culture where it's illegal to exist without a home essentially, right. Because if you don't have a home, you don't have anywhere that you can be outside of public hours. So when the parks are closed, where do you go? You don't have anywhere to go. And the feelings I've experienced of walking into a Starbucks to use the bathroom…I don't even know if the workers cared, but that I have to hide my body or myself, my presence so [that] I don’t cause a scene just so I can use the restroom. And that definitely translated into, as I got older, into staying at friends' houses, because I [was] stay[ing] at their house, but it's not like I was living there. It's not a good feeling adjusting to the sense that you're hidden from society or that you should be [hidden from society]. And so when you're not, you start to feel uncomfortable. At least that's what I was. I'd feel uncomfortable just existing. Which definitely didn't make it easier to get help. But luckily, you know, I had support and people who reminded me that they love me.”

We lost Julien earlier this week. All who ever got to know Julien are absolutely devastated by his passing. We love you Julien. You are deeply missed.

Julien’s family has created a GoFundMe to cover unexpected costs, including the care of Julien’s sweet and elderly dog Bruce.

Hello friends! In two weeks we'll be hosting a skillshare event. We'll have a basic class on gardening with multiple knowledgeable people there to answer questions. We will be opening up the beehive and showing people a little bit about it. We will be offering an overview of beekeeping and a small insight into the fascinating world of these wonderful friends. And if everything goes well, we'll harvest the first of the community honey!!

And, finally, after dealing with the loss of our kitchen, we are excited to start cooking again. Stick around after the gardening classes, or just show up at Noon to if you want to learn more about volunteering with us!!

Hey friends!! Just wanted to shout out the new third space in town. .collective.phx

We cannot understate how amazing this new space is.

There is a new autonomous community place growing at Misty's Ranch in Laveen. The folks at "The Barn" are working hard to build something accessible for folks who want to make, build, grow food, print zines and in 3d, gather, cook, record music, share resources, host a meeting, build a decentralized internet, host a concert or just hang out. All for either totally free, bring your own materials, or a small fee for large jobs of consumables.

There are tons on ways to get involved or tons of ways to use the space for free. They already hosted some traveling artists and there were like 50 people out there for there show. There is room for whole-ass festivals out here, and several sand volley ball courts. And it's part of a larger functioning farm!

Srsly tons of ways to get involved

Message the folks direct there for more info!

Farm day in Two Sundays! 30 June from 8A to 11A we will be working in the community farm. We will be building an owl house, a cat house, and a bat house. We will be conducting a hive inspection. And there will be skillshare opportunities!

Come grow with us! Meet some friends, talk s**t about colonialism, pet a goat or just hang out?

A couple folks are already leaving their mark and we have a couple smaller gardens sprouting up. Come grow something personal or help us grow food for the community!
