03/09/2026
Tomorrow March 10, 2026 is a day to stay weather aware.
When tornado risk is elevated, staying weather-aware can make a huge difference in how quickly you react if warnings are issued. Here are practical ways to stay prepared and informed 🌪️
1. Enable Real-Time Alerts on Your Phone
Turn on Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA) in your phone settings so you receive urgent warnings automatically.
Install reliable weather apps like:
The Weather Channel
MyRadar Weather Radar
AccuWeather
These provide radar, lightning tracking, and push notifications.
2. Have a NOAA Weather Radio
A NOAA Weather Radio receives alerts directly from the National Weather Service even if power or internet fails.
Choose one with battery backup and SAME alerts for your county.
3. Know the Difference: Watch vs Warning
Tornado Watch: Conditions are favorable—stay alert.
Tornado Warning: A tornado is occurring or imminent—take shelter immediately.
4. Check Radar and Local Forecast Updates
Follow updates from the National Weather Service office covering your area (for Chicago it’s NWS Chicago).
Radar apps help you see storms approaching before warnings are issued.
5. Follow Local Meteorologists
Local TV meteorologists often provide live tracking during severe weather and may give neighborhood-level guidance faster than national sources.
6. Identify Your Safe Place Ahead of Time
Before storms arrive:
Go to a basement if possible.
If no basement: a small interior room on the lowest floor.
Stay away from windows.
Have shoes, flashlight, and helmets nearby.
7. Keep Multiple Ways to Get Alerts
Don’t rely on only one method. Combine:
Phone alerts
Weather radio
TV or streaming coverage
Weather apps
✅ Quick rule: If severe weather is expected, check updates every 15–30 minutes and keep alerts on loud.
🚨 SIGNIFICANT SEVERE THREAT TUESDAY AFTERNOON THROUGH THE OVERNIGHT with storms capable of producing TORNADOES 🌪️ (some may be STRONG – up to EF2), Very Large Hail🧊 (over 2 inches possible), and Damaging Winds💨.
Scattered severe thunderstorms are expected Tuesday from the Southern Plains into the Southern Great Lakes region, with ALL severe hazards possible. A bi-modal severe weather setup is expected, with two primary corridors of concern across the Midwest and central Texas.
➡️MIDWEST (Primary Tornado Corridor)
The greatest regional severe threat will likely focus along a frontal boundary from northern Missouri into Illinois and portions of Kansas Tuesday afternoon and evening. Storms developing near the warm front may become discrete supercells capable of producing TORNADOES — including STRONG tornadoes 🌪️ (up to EF2).
Large to VERY LARGE HAIL 🧊 (possibly exceeding 2 inches) will also be possible with stronger storms. As the evening progresses, storms may begin to cluster or grow into lines, increasing the DAMAGING WIND THREAT 💨.
⚠️ The greatest tornado potential currently appears to be along the warm front across central Illinois between approximately 3 PM and 8 PM CST.
➡️CENTRAL TEXAS / SOUTHERN PLAINS
Storms may begin developing late Tuesday morning into early afternoon from north Texas toward the Texarkana region where capping may be weaker. By late afternoon and evening, more widespread thunderstorm development is expected across central Texas.
Initial discrete supercells may produce VERY LARGE HAIL 🧊 (around 2+ inches) and possibly a couple of tornadoes 🌪️. As stronger forcing arrives during the evening, storms may grow into clusters or bowing segments, bringing a higher threat for DAMAGING WINDS 💨, with the potential for embedded circulations as the low-level jet strengthens overnight.
⏱️ TIMING
• Late Morning: Isolated storms possible across north Texas / Texarkana region
• Afternoon into Evening: Supercell potential increases across central Texas and the Midwest frontal zone
• Evening into Overnight: Storms may grow into clusters or lines, increasing the damaging wind threat
⚠️ BOTTOM LINE: A bi-modal severe weather event appears possible Tuesday, with the highest tornado threat across the Midwest warm-front corridor, while central Texas may see supercells capable of producing very large hail and damaging winds.
⚠️ Have a plan in place Tuesday afternoon and evening. DO NOT SLEEP NAKED. 🌪️
