Sandra Day O'Connor was sworn in as the first woman SCOTUS Justice on September 25, 1981. In 2020, Arizona officially adopted the day as Sandra Day O'Connor Civics Celebration Day. View our exhibit on the 3rd floor of the Museum to learn more about Justice O'Connor and her lasting impression on Arizona and the nation.

Arizona's Winged Victory was modeled after the Greek goddess Nike, who was the goddess of victory. Nike was sometimes referred to as “Winged Victory,” such as in the case of the famous ancient statue Winged Victory of Samothrace. Arizona's statue is also a weathervane and holds a torch in her right hand and a wreath in her left hand.
