It pains us at Tomorrow We Vote to learn of the tragic passing of Alvin Nelson. Alvin was recommended to us by a good friend (and his cousin) in 2020 to help get out the vote in the summer down in Yuma. We drove down after a phone conversation to give instructions and materials and Alvin took off!

He created his own team, organized his own internal system of collecting names and doors knocked plus conversations. Everything was handwritten after a month and he had collected crucial data for our organization each weekend till the election date. It gave us a map of Yuma voters in several neighborhoods.

Alvin was a friendly man despite his initial imposing stature. He offset that with large smile and a quickness to invite you (even my mother on one occasion) into his home to cool down and have a drink or conversation. His involvement and impact never went unnoticed and I wish more Alvins existed in this world to help change it for the better.

Unfortunately last week, Alvin’s life was taken from him. His cousin reached out to tell us the horrific news but gave us a bit of information which impacted us. He said Alvin never forgot about his work with Tomorrow We Vote and loved working for us. His brothers and sisters said it was a “turning point for him”. The feeling is mutual, Alvin.

Rest easy and thanks for what you had done for Arizona. 💜✌️⭐️

The Supreme Court ruled recently in the Louisiana vs. Callais case to redraw a map in the state which they ruled in a partisan 6-3 decision was race-based and therefore unconstitutional. The issue is the map created was to give representation to the state’s 1/3rd Black population a seat in their Congressional District. One seat out of six. Currently, there are two out of the six districts which are Black-represented.

This ruling eliminates the new map and asks for Louisiana to create new maps. The submissions of these new maps divide the Black districts, weakening their voting rights power and essentially leaves them with no representation. Subsequently, the Black voters, who largely vote for liberal candidates and causes will be shut out.

The Voting Rights Act was created to stop acts like this but now with the SCOTUS ruling, unless it’s stated as an act of racial politics specifically as opposed to as a political action, it’s legal. So, the protections Black voters had since 1965 is thus eliminated in states where their votes added congressional and house seats. This will affect everything from racial discrimination protections, school boards, project funding, and more.

In a sense, it’s a step back into the Jim Crow era where racial voting laws weren’t regulated and mostly Southern states were able to discriminate in majority Black districts with their own style of voter disenfranchisement - literacy tests and more. Some in power believe states have moved on from racist ideologies and wouldn’t inflict discrimination tactics on Black people/voters like they have in the past.

Texas is already underway to redraw their maps. Look for others to do the same in order to maintain control of Congress in the 2026 elections and beyond.

👉 It’s being proposed under AZ Senate Bill 1570, under its amendment (replacing its original intent) to include federal agents at voting polling sites. This includes armed ICE agents in their official capacity to also stand at polling stations and oversee those entering and exiting as they participate in the voting process.

Voter fraud data has shown to have occurred between 0.0000031% and 0.0009% depending on the study. This could be between 0.03 - 9 cases per 1,000,000 according to the Heritage Foundation and Brookings Institute.

When convictions do occur, they often involve misunderstandings of eligibility rules (e.g., people with prior felonies who didn’t know their rights were restored) rather than intentional manipulation.​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​

Out of the nearly 1,520,981,626 votes cast since 2000-2024, only around 3000 have been found fraudulent - which carries up to 5 years in prison and up to a $10,000 fine.

You are more likely to be struck by lightning in a given year than to cast a fraudulent vote — and you’re far more likely to encounter voter fraud allegations that turn out to be clerical errors (like a name mismatch in a database) than actual fraud.

Another way to think about it: you have better odds of being dealt a royal flush on your first hand of poker (about 1 in 650,000) than of randomly selecting a fraudulent ballot from a typical election.

🤔 So, is this bill necessary? Are armed agents standing at the doors of polling stations (which can intimidate voters) worth the odds of one committing voter fraud? And who does this bill serve when voter fraud is already illegal. Let us know. ✌️⭐️

Tomorrow We Vote was invited by ASU USG-WV at ASU West for a Voter Registration Training. And it was AWESOME! Everyone was so engaged and willing to learn everything there is to registering new voters. The laws change often and Tomorrow We Vote is up-to-date on all procedures to make sure any voter registrations are smooth and easy to do for newbies and those who need a refresher.

Thanks for inviting us into your space once again and continuing the teamwork between TWV and regarding voter education and civic engagement! ✌️⭐️
