SB1182 was sent to Gov. Hobbs today, and she now has until Tuesday, 4/23/24, to sign or veto it. This is Kavanagh’s school shower bill that basically says that in a shared shower space, only people of the same biologic s*x defined at birth can be in it. It also says that if anyone requests a private shower, one must be provided if they prove their s*x. Trans students are the only students who would not be able to get a private shower space, and it’s already illegal for trans kids to play sports. If you have not already done so, please contact Gov. Hobbs office and ask her to veto SB1182.

In a bid to keep transgender women off of girl’s sports teams and out of public restrooms, Arizona Republicans are pushing to insert a narrow and inflexible definition of biological s*x into state law that would effectively eliminate all legal recognition of transgender people.

11 Arizona Senate Republicans signed on to a bill to completely erase transgender people and deny them any legal status in the gender that they live. This would be devastating to the lives of thousands of transgender Arizonans. We are harmless people, dealing with a very real condition, and simply trying to pursue our happiness. This act of extreme hate against a tiny, harmless minority is a very dangerous step down the road to total fascism.

A black trans woman was shot and killed by her boyfriend in Casa Grande, and so far police have made no arrests, despite their being witnesses and a known assailant. The family is trying to bring attention to this case.

Anti-drag bill SB1026 and the anti-trans bathroom bill for schools SB1040 are both up for final House floor vote tomorrow, Wednesday 4/12/23. SB1028 and SB1030, which started as anti-drag bills but had the drag references amended out of them (but Republicans still think will be used against drag shows) are also up for final vote. If you haven't done so, please contact your House representatives and ask them to vote against these bills.

To those celebrating Transgender Day of Visibility today, we want you to know that you are seen. We see you for who you are: Made in the image of God and deserving of dignity, respect, and support.

We know it’s hard when there are those who don’t see you, who don’t respect you. So, let us be clear: attacks against the trans community are un-American and must end. Our Administration will never quit fighting to stop discrimination, stand against unjust state laws, and guarantee everyone the fundamental right and freedom to be who they are.

To parents of a transgender child – affirming your child’s identity is one of the most powerful things you can do to keep them safe and healthy.

And to any transgender American who is struggling – please know that you are not alone.

We’ll never stop working to create a world where you can live without fear, one where everyone feels surrounded by compassion and love.

And know this.

You are so brave.

SB1700 will be heard in the Senate Education hearing this Wednesday at 2:00 (along with SB1040). SB1700 will give parents the power to have removed from school libraries, and effectively bans, any books they find objectionable on a s*xual basis, and includes any books that, “PROMOTE GENDER FLUIDITY OR GENDER PRONOUNS.” A clear attack on trans-acceptance, it equates being nice to trans kids with pe******ia. Gender fluidity is not a thing promoted, but is a naturally occurring phenomenon some people experience. The use of “gender pronouns” is particularly puzzling. Pronouns are a basic part of speech, and most languages have gendered pronouns. I don’t see how you could have any English textbook, or pretty much any book written in English or a Romance Language, in a school library.

Please write the members of the Senate Education Committee asking them to oppose this bill, or at least call for it to be amended to remove the gender references. This bill is sponsored by Justine Wadsack, the committee’s Vice Chair. Ken Bennett is the best hope to get a Republican to oppose it.
