Happy Nat Turner Day!/Happy Black August!
Today, after 10 years of planning Nat Turner, launched his famous revolt. It lasted for 4 days and was the deadliest uprising of enslaved Afrikans in the U.S. for whites, 55 were killed.
The slave holding society was so shaken by Nat’s uprising that the savages, after hanging him, skinned and dismembered his body. The body parts were distributed as souviners, a coin purse was made from part of his skin and they rendered what was left of his body into grease.
The immediate result of Turner’s actions in Virginia those 4 days in August resulted in over 2k Virginians signing over 40 petitions demanding the end of slavery. This is important to understand. When we say we freed ourselves, this is what we mean. Each uprising of our enslaved ancestors made the Amerikan settlers reconsider slavery from the point that enslaving Black ppl put all settlers in danger. For more context, only four years later in 1835 the Amerikans fought their bloodiest war (2nd Gullah/Seminole War) for the Amerikan continent against an alliance of the Seminoles and Afrikan escapees that saw the Black/Native alliance attack plantations through out Florida and Georgia in an effort to stop slavery, which they saw as the economic engine driving settler colonization of the continent. The Amerikan Civil War started less than 20 years after it ended. (and we fought in that too)
We celebrate Nat Turner’s dedication and commitment to Black freedom and are inspired by his example to keep pushing until total freedom and justice are won!
