For Staff Sgt. Thomas Reed, being a noncommissioned officer, is far more than just a rank. It is about setting the example for Soldiers to follow.

Raised in Buffalo, New York, Reed now serves with the 2-3 Infantry Battalion as the sniper section leader. With five years in the Army, he has spent most of his career as a sniper and takes pride in developing the Soldiers under his care.

“Knowing your job is the baseline,” Reed said. “What makes an exceptional NCO is recognizing the responsibility you have to shape young men and women who may have never had mentors before. You have to assume you are that role model and conduct yourself that way every day.”

In the field, Reed ensures his teams are integrated effectively into operations.

“Snipers provide intelligence that can completely alter a commander’s plan,” he said. “My role is making sure my Soldiers are positioned, supported, and their information is used to drive the mission forward.”

Of the Army values, loyalty stands out most to him.

“In two or three-man teams, loyalty is everything. You have to know the guy next to you has your back, no questions asked. That trust is what makes us effective,” he said.
Reed also emphasizes the importance of humility and leading by example.

“You have to be honest when things go wrong and learn from it. And you can’t just know the job, you have to live it. I want my Soldiers to see that I’m willing to put in the work every single day,” he said. “A good NCOs know their job, but a great NCO can lead from the front.”
