The agency provides services for fire prevention, urban and community forestry, forest stewardship, forest health, utilization and marketing, and has a wide variety of grants available. The A

rizona State Forestry Division provides for the prevention and suppression of wildland fire on 22 million acres of State Trust Land and private property located outside incorporated communities. Our Fire Suppression efforts support aviation resources, fire fighter training, dispatching of personnel and equipment, and business management information. Our Fire Prevention efforts include helping communities learn about and become Firewise, community prevention planning, homeowner and community risk assessments, and youth education. Our fire prevention efforts also include granting funds to communities to reduce the hazardous fuels in and around the communities as well as on State lands. Arizona State acquires and refurbishes wildland firefighting equipment and makes these resources available to rural fire department and fire districts. The Urban and Community Forestry program offers assistance to communities and homeowners in care and management of their trees, planting projects, along with the Champion, Heritage, and Witness trees in the State. The Forest Stewardship program offers forest land owner assistance with management plans Provide forest resource stewardship through strategic implementation of forest health policies and cooperative forestry assistance programs. The Forest Health program offers technical assistance to communities and landowners on the numerous insects and diseases that threaten their trees. The Utilization and Marketing program offers communities, contractors, and companies assistance in starting, improving, or expanding their operations to provide markets for the vast hazardous fuel reduction and forest restoration efforts that are needed within the state. There are grants available to help communities reduce hazardous fuels, acquire equipment and supplies for their local fire fighters, training, prevention of insect and disease outbreaks, reducing invasive plants, as well as cost share grants for urban community efforts.

Ignitions are now complete on the Crusher Prescribed Fire southwest of Flagstaff. Crews were able to treat 70-acres. Smoke off the project is lifting and dispersing favorably.

The purpose of the broadcast burn was to reduce stagnant vegetation piles, clean the forest floor, and protect healthy Ponderosa pine stands. While at the same time, the project reduces the threat of catastrophic fire to nearby communities.

Drivers along State Route 89A in the area of the project should use caution on the road due to the potential for drifting smoke.

Crusher RX is located 9 miles west of Kachina Village, 10 miles south/southwest of Flagstaff along SR 89A.

When the forest conjures its own Halloween spirits🧙🏻

Some say that’s just smoke among the shadows and others swear they see a witch keeping watch among the trees.

Either way, the night’s alive with a little magic - and maybe a touch of mischief.

Enjoy your night tonight and be safe!

Starting November 3, Arizona Forestry plans to conduct two prescribed fire projects southwest of Flagstaff.

🔥Crusher RX: 65 acres, located along SR-89A, and southwest of Flagstaff. Ignitions planned for the morning of Monday, 11/3, with the potential for drifting smoke across the highway. Electronic signs are out to warn drivers of the project work.

🔥Rogers Lake RX: 150 acres, located northwest of Rogers Lake and southwest of Flagstaff. Ignitions are also planned for the morning with smoke expected to push to the northeast.

Both projects are one-day projects that provide wildfire risk reduction and also help restore the health of the forests.

Arizona Forestry works closely with the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality to mitigate smoke impacts to nearby communities. All prescribed fire projects must have approval from ADEQ prior to ignitions.

The calendar says October, but Mother Nature seems to disagree. And as we've said before, fire is no longer a 'season' in Arizona.

Even in the fall, fire activity continues across Arizona. Down south, two of our wildland fire crews are assigned to the Stanford Fire supporting the Coronado National Forest and their suppression efforts.

Crews are going direct at 8,000 feet.

The Coronado NF reported as of today, Wednesday, October 29, the 160-acre fire, located within the Chiricahua Wilderness, has transitioned to a Type 3 incident.

For updates on the Stanford Fire, visit the U.S. Forest Service – Coronado National Forest page or Inciweb.

DFFM staff are in attendance at the Arizona Wildland Urban Interface Conference in Prescott this week.

We’re enjoying listening, learning, and collaborating with our partners across our great state.

Director Tom Torres spoke about DFFM’s work to mitigate the impact of catastrophic wildfire on communities across Arizona. He touched on the years of fuels mitigation work around the town of Greer, which ended up being pivotal when the Greer Fire ignited earlier this year.

Make sure your halloween isn't extra spooky this year...

Be sure your decorations are far from open flames, and use glow sticks or lights instead of candles in jack-o-lanterns!

It really BUGS us when folks transport firewood! ✋

Out-of-state wood can house invasive pests, such as the Emerald Ash Borer, that can harm Arizona's forests. Buy it local, burn it local! 🌲

As we prepare for the upcoming prescribed fire season, one of the most critical aspects of planning is weather.

Weather dictates the plan, the process, and implementation. If the weather is not favorable or conducive to burning, we have to postpone, whether that's out of public and firefighter safety, or even project effectiveness.

One of the tools we use to track or gather weather trends, like winds, relative humidity levels, and temperatures is through a Remote Automatic Weather Station or RAWS. Recently, and ahead of our Cherry Prescribed Fire in Oracle, a few Battalion Chiefs set up one of our portable RAWS units to collect weather data before, during, and after the project.

The agency has both portable and stationary RAWS across the state to help gather weather information for both prescribed fire projects and wildfires.

The RAWS data is easily captured in real time allowing for more accurate and safer project planning and implementation.
