Sunday on the Schuylkill River

For our July drill, we trained in Montgomery County near the abandoned railroad trestle just upriver from the Route 29 Bridge.

Our divers practiced searching the river bottom around the bridge abutments while tenders put their previous training to work from closer to shore. We were also glad to have several new team members join us and gain valuable hands-on experience.

While dive operations were underway, other members conducted drone training from a small island near the bridge, focusing on battery management and aerial search techniques along the river.

Special thanks to Valley Forge Volunteer Fire Co. for providing Brush 68 so we could clean our divers and equipment before leaving.

These monthly drills help keep our team prepared for the moments when every second counts.

Charge up devices now, if you can. 📲

Think about what you'd need if you had to leave quickly, and have it ready. 🎒

Gas up your vehicle. ⛽ Remember: Pumps don't work if the power is out.

Never walk, swim, or drive into standing water. Turn around, don't drown. ⚠️

Remember that flooding can be impossible to see at night. Use extra caution if you must travel in the dark. 👀

Today, volunteer members from Friendship Fire Co assisted UPT Fire & Emergency Services in keeping the public safe along the Schuylkill River as the Union Pacific Big Boy No. 4014 passed thru on its way to Philadelphia to be a part of our Country's 250th anniversary. To beat the heat, a great many folks decided the best way to watch 4014 going by was from the water. All told, members were on hand for a little over 5 hrs as pleasure craft went in the water, trekked about a mile up river, and then returned to the boat launch. Despite the high temperatures, it was a pleasure to serve the public and witness this mighty steam engine visit the east for the first time since it was built in Schenectady, New York, in 1941.

It is with great sadness that Friendship Fire Company Diving-Rescue Unit mourns the unexpected passing of past Dive Captain and current unit member Edward Conway. Ed first joined the Friendship Fire Company in 1956 and served as an active member until 1986. He recently returned to the company in 2024 and has been a constant presence at our house since. Please join us in keeping his family in our thoughts and prayers. His positive outlook and go-get-em spirit even in his twilight years will be missed by our organization and members.
