🐾 Wildlife Wednesday! 🐾

"Phew! Hope no one saw that!"

This javelina almost took a tumble in one of our wildlife ponds! Like all the members of their clade, Euungulata (ungulates), they have hooved feet. You can imagine this makes walking on sloped wet surfaces a little bit of a challenge! Unless you are a whale, which is an ungulate but doesn't have feet. That would make slipping while walking up a sloped surface pretty difficult!

🐾 Wildlife Wednesday! 🐾

Picacho Peak is home to two species of vulture: the turkey vulture, and the black vulture. An easy way to tell the two apart is by the color of the head. Turkey vultures have a red head, while black vultures have a black-ish grey head. Both of these birds lack feathers on their head, a trait evolved to help them stay clean and free of parasites while scavenging on carcasses.

🌵Floral Friday 🌵
Our saguaros are officially in bloom! These iconic desert giants only flower for a short window each year, typically April to June. Saguaro flowers bloom at night and early morning, providing nectar to bats and a great food source for birds and bees. Come enjoy these desert flowers while they last.

🐾Wildlife Wednesday🐾

This regal-looking Gila Woodpecker was spotted enjoying the desert sunshine.

Instead of singing loudly like many birds, woodpeckers often drum on cacti, trees, and even metal surfaces to communicate and mark their territory. If you hear rapid tapping echoing through the desert, a woodpecker might be nearby!
