๐จ IMPORTANT CHANGES TO MISSISSIPPI JUVENILE LAWS ๐จ
Beginning July 1, 2026, Mississippi Senate Bill 2710 (SB2710) will make significant changes to how certain offenses committed by juveniles are handled in the criminal justice system.
Under this new law, juveniles charged with serious offenses may no longer begin their cases in youth court. Instead, those cases may fall under the original jurisdiction of circuit court, exposing juveniles to the adult criminal justice system and significantly more severe penalties.
The law specifically impacts juveniles that attempt to commit or commit crimes of violence as defined by MS Code 97-3-2 while in possession of a firearm such as:
๐น Murder
๐น Aggravated Assault
๐น Manslaughter
๐น Kidnapping
๐น Robbery
๐น Drive By Shooting
๐น Shooting Into a Dwelling
This can result in:
โข Adult felony charges
โข Lengthy prison sentences
โข Permanent criminal records
โข Long-term impacts on employment, education, and future opportunities
The Picayune Police Department encourages parents and guardians to speak openly with young people about peer influence, social media conflicts, gang involvement, and the serious legal consequences associated with criminal activity.
Our department remains committed to protecting our community through education, prevention, and enforcement.
