Today, Pickens County EMS joins our community in recognizing International Overdose Awareness Day a time to remember the lives lost to overdose, support the families and friends who carry that loss, and recognize the work being done every day to prevent another tragedy.

Our Community Paramedic works beyond the initial 911 response to help bridge the gap between an emergency and the resources available in our community. Each contact is another opportunity to provide education, offer support, distribute or discuss lifesaving resources such as naloxone, and most importantly to help someone take the next step toward recovery.

Through our Community Paramedic Program, we are working to follow up with individuals who have experienced an overdose and help connect them with resources, treatment options, recovery support, and other services that may help them move forward.

We are encouraged to see overdose numbers moving in the right direction, but the work isn't finished.

Tonight at 7:00 PM, Behavioral Health Services of Pickens County and Foothills Fentanyl Fight will hold an International Overdose Awareness Day Vigil on the steps of the Pickens County Courthouse.

🕯️ Remember those we have lost
💜 Support families affected by overdose
🤝 Stand together as a community
🌱 Share hope for treatment and recovery
🕊️ Honor the lives behind the statistics

Pickens County EMS is proud to work alongside our community partners and to have our Community Paramedic helping connect people with resources when they may need them most.

Not every day do our crews get the opportunity to reunite with one of their patients but this reunion was especially meaningful.

Steve Durham suffered a sudden cardiac arrest. His wife, a retired nurse, immediately began CPR while on the phone with one of our 911 dispatchers. With calm, professional coaching from our dispatcher Pickens County Sheriff's Office (SC) and the rapid response of our first responders, Mr. Durham received lifesaving care when every second mattered.

A special thank you to the members of Crosswell Fire, who arrived within minutes to begin care. Our Pickens County EMS crews continued advanced treatment, successfully restored Mr. Durham's pulse, and stabilized him during transport to the emergency department.

This story is a powerful reminder that survival from cardiac arrest is truly a team effortfrom the family member willing to act, to the 911 dispatcher providing guidance, to the fire department and EMS crews delivering lifesaving care.

We were honored to see Mr. Durham doing well and to share a meal with him and his wife. Thank you both for the wonderful lunch and for allowing us to be part of your story. Seeing you healthy and smiling is the greatest reward any first responder could ask for.

❤️ Stories like this remind us why we do what we do.

This week, we had the opportunity to conduct our first monthly in-service training at the new Pickens County Emergency Readiness Center.

We were pleased to welcome Bobby Wales, a former employee and Training Officer who now works for RQI, as one of our guest instructors.

We also had the pleasure of hosting Lisa Smith from the Burn Center, who shared her expertise with our team.

We appreciate both of them taking the time to contribute to the ongoing education and professional development of our personnel.
