Discover the fascinating world of fungi in this beginner-friendly, hands-on class at Hagood Mill Historic Site. Mushrooms 101 is designed for those curious about identifying, growing, and understanding mushrooms in a safe and practical way.

In this engaging session, you’ll learn the basics of mushroom anatomy and classification, with a focus on beginner-friendly families. You’ll gain practical knowledge on how to distinguish mushrooms by genus or family, along with examples to help identify individual species. For safety, the class will also cover a few deadly poisonous mushrooms in detail—an essential foundation for anyone interested in foraging.

The class goes beyond the classroom with hands-on experience in mushroom cultivation. Students will learn how to grow mushrooms both on logs and in garden beds, including step-by-step instruction on inoculating logs using proven techniques. Each participant will inoculate their own log as part of the Hagood Mill mushroom garden—giving you the opportunity to return and watch your mushrooms grow over time.

We’ll also spend time exploring the property to look for wild mushrooms, reinforcing identification skills in a real-world setting.

What You’ll Learn:

Basic mushroom anatomy and classification
Beginner-friendly identification techniques
How to recognize a few dangerous, poisonous species
Methods for cultivating mushrooms on logs and in beds
Hands-on log inoculation and mushroom garden care

What to Bring:

Notebook or materials for taking notes
Old shoes (hot wax is used during inoculation and may drip)

Walk away with a strong foundation in mushroom identification and cultivation—and the confidence to continue learning on your own.

Step back in time and experience the art of traditional blacksmithing! Join historical demonstrator Kevin Thompson for a hands-on introduction to this centuries-old craft. In this immersive class, students will learn foundational blacksmithing techniques and create simple yet functional items like S-hooks and wall hooks.
What You’ll Learn:

🔨 The five essential blacksmithing techniques:

Drawing out
Tapering
Bending
Scrolling
Twisting

🔥 Additional skills covered:

Blacksmith shop safety
Basic finishing techniques
The history and significance of blacksmithing
How to build, maintain, and use a coal fire
Types of fuel and materials used in blacksmithing

What to Bring:

✅ Safety glasses
✅ Closed-toe shoes, long pants, and a long-sleeved shirt

Important Notes:

Students under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. The adult does not need to be a paying student but must remain outside the smithy.

Join us at Hagood Mill Historic Site on Saturday, June 27, from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM for our Beginner Foraging Class and discover the hidden bounty growing all around you!

During this hands-on class, you'll learn:

I am teaching a low sugar natural Pectin canning class Sunday at 1:00. We will be doing Rainier Cherry Preserves & dark plum, pear jam w/spices & vanilla. Walk-ins are welcome the cost is $80 which includes 2 different preserves, cans & fruits provided. Join us Saturday, June 20, 2026 from 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM for a full day of live Americana and folk music, Appalachian heritage, artisan demonstrations, food vendors, and family-friendly fun at Hagood Mill Historic Site!

🎤 Featuring performances by:

• Rachel VanSlyke – A talented Upstate South Carolina singer-songwriter known for her heartfelt lyrics, soulful vocals, and acoustic Americana style. Rachel’s music blends folk, country, and roots influences into performances that are both intimate and emotionally powerful.

• Helen Campbell – A rising folk and Americana artist whose warm voice and thoughtful songwriting draw inspiration from Appalachian traditions and contemporary acoustic music. Her performances capture the spirit of storytelling that defines the Americana genre.
