If you are a wildflower enthusiast, the Shell Leaf Penstemon (Penstemon grandiflorus) is in full bloom along the Sumac Loop. The Soapweed (Yucca glauca) along the Yucca Loop will finish blooming in the coming weeks along with a variety of other wildflowers and forbs that have been incorporated into the habitat along the trail system. Penstemon is a magnet for Bumblebees, hummingbirds, and a variety of butterflies.

On May 7th, 2026, the Fort Randall Project hosted the 3rd Annual Dirty Boots Day. Dirty Boots Day is facilitated to allow all employees the opportunity to work together and improve the nature trail system.

This year we had 14 employees who volunteered to help and they collectively sanded and stained 21 cedar benches, cleared trees, and mulched brush piles along the trail system. Thank you to all who participated.

Field Trip Season!

We enjoy school group visitors throughout the year, but especially toward the end of the school year!

We receive annual visits from many local schools, and we’re happy to provide education on our Hydropower, Wildlife, and provide Water Safety programs to help kids be safe during their summer vacations!

The Fort Randall trail crew recently installed ten interpretive panels around the Yucca Loop. The message of these signs encourages trail users to connect with their surroundings as they travel through nature.

Spring is a fantastic time of year to visit the trail system. There is a wide variety of songbird species moving in to the area. Wildflowers will start blooming late May and early June.

Stay tuned for more trail improvements as we progress through the summer.

The Fort Randall Project had a few unsual visitors today in the Randall Creek Boat Basin. These three Trumpeter Swans (2 adults, 1 juvenile) stopped by on their journey north.

Trumperter swans are large birds, weighing more than 25 pounds. These swans typically inhabit wetlands; spending the winter in the southern U.S and nesting on the remote wetlands in Alaska, Canada, and the northwestern U.S. The yellow coloring seen on the plumage of the two adults is likely due to them foraging in an iron-rich wetland.

Ice is piling up along the dam and southern shorelines. This occurs some years when the ice conditions get soft from warm weather, and high winds combine, to shift the reservoir ice around. Sometimes piling the ice up along the shorelines in the process.

Here are some videos from this morning’s flow out of the outlet works to remove the ice built up in the stilling basin.
During most winters, this only needs to occur once or twice a winter, in order to remove the ice in the stillway to prevent potential damage to the concrete structure.
As you can see, the ice usually breaks up into fairly small pieces as it flows over the wall. The ice typically breaks up and is widely dispersed within about 30 minutes.
