Today, we celebrated Guatemalan Heritage Week at City Hall! 🇬🇹💙

Los Angeles is made stronger by the rich diversity of the communities that call our city home. The Guatemalan community is an important part of that story, with generations of civic leaders, artists, activists, workers, and families whose contributions continue to shape our neighborhoods and our city.

We were proud to welcome Guatemalan leaders, organizations, and community members to Council Chambers for a presentation recognizing those contributions, followed by an afternoon of culture and community at City Hall in partnership with SALEF.

And tonight, City Hall will shine blue and white in celebration of Guatemalan heritage across Los Angeles. 🇬🇹

Roll up your sleeves and help us show the neighborhood some love! 🧹💚

Tomorrow, is joining the Organizing Committee of the Angelina Apartments for a community clean-up to pick up litter and help care for the neighborhood together. Join us Saturday, August 29th from 8 AM to 11 AM at the corner of 1336 W. Angelina St., Los Angeles, CA 90017.

Tools, masks, water, and snacks will be provided. Just bring yourself and a neighbor. See you tomorrow!

Limited parking and heavy traffic from Dodger Stadium have impacted Chavez Ravine residents for years. Now, neighbors have a year-round Preferential Parking District designed to prioritize parking for the people who live there.

Getting here took community organizing. 75% of residents on the impacted streets had to sign on for the process to move forward, and neighbors like Rae knocked on doors and gathered signatures block by block.

As Rae shared, knowing your neighbors and building a network in your community matters. It’s how residents share information, connect each other to resources, and organize around the issues impacting their blocks.

The new PPD includes Lookout Dr. between Lilac Terrace and Stadium Way; Lilac Terrace between Lookout Dr. and Stadium Way; W. Curtis St., Bernard St.; and Coronel St. along Stadium Way.

Thank you to all the residents who organized to make this happen, and LADOT for helping move this community-led effort across the finish line.

Our Food Distribution Program is about tackling food insecurity by putting fresh, quality groceries directly into the hands of residents who need them most. 🥬🍎

Last week, we renewed that commitment with an additional $500,000 investment to continue working with Los Angeles CCNP to distribute thousands of bags of groceries to constituents across CD1.

That work is made possible by organizations throughout the district that help us bring these resources directly into their communities. Thank you to The People Concern for helping organize our latest distribution at The Quincy, one of the permanent supportive housing sites in our district, and getting groceries directly to residents.

42 more solar streetlights are now up and running in Glassell Park! ☀️💡

Last week, streetlights along Division Street, Verdugo Road, Carlyle Street, and W. Avenue 45 were converted to solar power, bringing more reliable, cost-effective lighting to the neighborhood.

These 42 lights add to the hundreds of solar streetlights installed across CD1, including in Lincoln Heights, Cypress Park, Westlake, and MacArthur Park. We’re continuing to pursue practical, long-term investments that improve visibility, strengthen neighborhood infrastructure, and help residents feel safer getting around their communities.

Thank you to LADWP, the Bureau of Contract Administration, and the crews and contractors who made these improvements possible! 💡✨

Families are already balancing rent, groceries, transportation, school clothes, and other everyday expenses. No parent should have to decide which of these essentials they can afford.

That’s why our Lincoln Heights Back to School Giveaway is about more than getting ready for the first day of school. With the support of our community partners, we distributed 1,700 backpacks and school supplies to students and families, helping fill the gap so our young people could start the year with what they need.

We’ll keep doing the work to strengthen our social safety net and make sure children and families have the resources they need to thrive.
