Now that we are getting back to “normal”, I know this will not do it justice, but I want to sum up what happens behind the scenes during the Biggest Bike Rally in the World! Here is a breakdown!
During the Sturgis Rally, you can look around Meade County and see the motorcycles, the crowds, and the activity, but behind the scenes, something else incredible is happening inside your Sheriff’s Office, Jail, and Dispatch Center. The entire operation transforms.
We essentially double our workforce to handle the tremendous increase in calls for service, jail inmates, arrests, court proceedings, paperwork, and everything else that comes with the Rally.
During the 2026 Sturgis Rally, there were 3,197 Calls for Service and 5,615 phone calls into the Meade County Dispatch Center. This center becomes the heartbeat of the operation. Our dispatchers deal with a constant stream of calls, not only for the sheriff office, but also the Sturgis Police Dept., Summerset Police Dept., Faith Police Dept, South Dakota Highway Patrol, Fire Dept., Ambulance, and all of our federal and state law enforcement partners. Our Dispatchers are dealing with everything from crashes and medical emergencies to fights, disturbances, lost people, suspicious activity, traffic problems, and calls that can change from routine to critical in seconds. They have to gather information, prioritize calls, keep track of where our deputies are, and get the right help moving, all while continuing to answer the next call. Their ability to stay calm, organized, and focused during absolute chaos is incredible. Our deputies are constantly moving from one call to the next, and the coordination between dispatch and the road is critical. With approximately 3500 mi.² in Meade County, Every call requires communication, resources, and often assistance from other agencies. It takes an incredible team effort to keep our deputies safe and respond to the needs of the public.
Let’s not forget our Corrections Officers who face an entirely different level of challenge. During this years Rally, the Meade County Jail received 314 inmates. In order to absorb this amount, we have open the “old jail” to help manage this tremendous increase in inmates. Sometimes standing room only! Our corrections staff are amazing at processing people coming through the doors, maintaining security, handling meals, medical needs, inmate movement, searches, booking, releases, and everything else required to operate a safe and secure facility.
And the cycle doesn’t stop!
Every morning, more staff are arriving as early as 4:00 AM to begin moving the paperwork and approximately 30–45 people from the jail through court. After court, our staff process releases, bonds, paperwork, and transfers. Once inmates are moved out, cells have to be cleaned and disinfected and the facility reset, because the process starts all over again the very next day.
Then there is the paperwork. Behind every arrest is a tremendous amount of documentation. reports, booking paperwork, evidence, charging documents, court paperwork, records, and all of the documentation necessary to make sure an arrest is properly processed and the initial court proceedings can move forward. It is literally reams of paper and hours of work that most people never see.
What amazes me most is the coordination between all of these groups.
Dispatch. Patrol. Corrections. Records. Administration. Court personnel. Prosecutors. Other law-enforcement agencies. Everyone has a role, and everyone’s work affects someone else’s ability to do their job.
When all of these moving parts come together, it is an incredible thing to witness. This is what teamwork looks like!

The Sturgis Rally doesn’t just happen. It takes an incredible team behind the scenes to keep it safe, organized, moving forward, and I am honored to be apart of that team.
