South Dakota Voters Reject Amendment H and Big Money Influence in Landslide Vote
November 5, 2024 – Sioux Falls, SD – In a powerful stand for South Dakota values, voters have rejected Amendment H, delivering a clear message to big money and special interests, that were seeking to reshape the state’s primary election process. The Vote No on Amendment H campaign, a grassroots coalition dedicated to preserving South Dakota’s electoral integrity, emerged victorious despite being outspent more than twenty to one.
Juliann Talkington, spokesperson for the Vote No on Amendment H committee, noted the strong community response against this and other deceptive tactics. “South Dakotans are honest, and they don't appreciate being manipulated. These ads tried to deceive voters, but our people saw through it and stood up for our state’s integrity,” Talkington said. “We will not ‘California’ our South Dakota.”
Amendment H, heavily funded by out-of-state backers, proposed adopting a “jungle primary” system similar to those in California and Washington. Vote No on H, supported by citizens across political lines, emphasized that South Dakota’s current system ensures all voices are represented and that changing it would disenfranchise voters with limited financial resources or political connections.
Ezra Hays, chair of Vote No on H, commented, “This victory goes beyond partisanship. We’ve seen unity among Democrats, Republicans, Libertarians, and Independents. South Dakotans came together to reject big money and deceptive advertising and protect our state’s election process.”
With voters rejecting Amendment H, South Dakota will continue with its current primary system, which ensures representation from all political parties and preserves the voice of the people, continuing to ensure that all voters can vote.
