Mike Durfee State Prison hosted a Dr. Seuss themed Family Reunification Event on August 22nd.

Participants played games, took part in activities, and shared a meal.

The Family Reunification Events are part of the SAFER SD Reentry Initiative and allow offenders more time with family and loved ones than the traditional visitation schedule.

Welcome to Anthony "Tony" Kozojed, who is the new Director of Juvenile Services!

Tony comes to us from the North Dakota Department of Corrections & Rehabilitation, Division of Juvenile Services where he has spent the last 29 years serving the public and managing youthful offenders.

Tony began his career as a Juvenile Correctional Specialist and his most recent position has been as Chief of Operations.

Thirteen offenders from the Sioux Falls Minimum Center started their first day of the Southeast Technical College welding certificate program on August 24th. They will be attending math, student success, and welding courses to become certified welders and are set to graduate on December 11th.

DOC is proud to work with Southeast Technical College and the South Dakota Department of Labor and Regulation to make this opportunity possible for the minimum custody offenders that are interested in the welding trade!

SDWP hosted our 3rd annual Summer Cookout on Saturday, August 22nd as part of a Family Reunification Event.

We served 44 offenders and 122 of their family members dinner in the rec yard. Children enjoyed visiting and playing various summer yard games with their mothers and family members throughout the evening.

The Family Reunification Events provide offenders with more time outside the traditional visitation time with family and loved ones prior to release from prison.

Congratulations to the offenders at the Women's Prison in Pierre on completing the Parenting Inside Out course!

Parenting Inside Out is an evidence-based parent management skills training program created specifically for criminal justice and systems-involved parents. The program is designed to assist participants in improving their interaction with their child and their child's caregiver.

Meet R***r, one of the dogs in the DOC dog programs across the state. https://www.doc.sd.gov/adult-corrections/programs

R***r is currently at the Mike Durfee State Prison in Springfield, but has completed programming and is ready for a forever home. The offender dog handlers train dogs from the Heartland Humane Society Yankton SD as part of the State Prison Obedience Training (S.P.O.T) program.

R***r is a wire-haired terrier who came to S.P.O.T. with a few behavioral issues and no formal training. He had a bad habit of “nipping” folks as they walked by and on occasion a few bites on his record. R***r had a nervous urination pattern that also was addressed. Offender Guzman has done a wonderful job of working with R***r on his negative behaviors, and with a lot of love, time, and attention (which he loves), R***r is no longer nipping or biting folks and has no more potty issues! R***r is crazy smart with the biggest brown eyes that lets you know he loves treats and to play in the water. R***r is a star pupil as he is a whiz when asked to sit, laydown, side, and great door manners.
