If you visit us today, be a little extra careful coming in. A lacewing laid her eggs on our front door. Lacewing larvae are great pest control. Once they hatch we will move them to the garden.

For Oahe Days Get the FREE Munch Code App!
During Oahe Days (and all summer long) use the the Munch Code Game for a fun way for families to practice healthier between meal snacking. Based on a simple color code, similar to traffic lights, the player discovers which foods and drinks are “green” (eat a bunch) which ones are “yellow” (have just a little) and which are “red” (not so much). https://healthysd.gov/get-the-free-munch-code-app/ #healthysd

Another week of summer camp has come to a close! This week our campers learned all about tracks and other traces that animals can leave behind!

We learned how to use our senses to explore the outdoors and used magnifying glasses to explore different animals from the critter crate that the Game Fish and Parks has put together! The campers also got to create their own tracks in plaster and on paper!

We kicked off our summer camp program this week with a Forensics camp! During the week we worked on the mystery of “What happened to Felix?”

On the first day of the camp our forensic scientists collected pieces of evidence and we worked together on finding out how those pieces fit into the mystery through various tests the rest of the week! Some of these tests included stain testing, powder testing, flame testing, and poisoned drink testing!

If you see any of these kids make sure to ask them about the badge the earned after completing the camp and what happened to Felix!

For more information on our future classes head on over to our website at: https://sd-discovery.org/Classes-and-Events

NASA and GLOBE Observer are collaborating to collect ground cover observations along the Lewis and Clark trail. You can do #citizenscience while you are traveling in the area this summer.

Head to your Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail and take #landcover observations using the NASA GLOBE Observer app. This summer-long campaign kicks off on #NationalTrailsDay and concludes on #LaborDay. Each observation you make along the trail will increase your chances to be one of our top observers and be eligible for a prize package. Learn more and plan to participate today: https://observer.globe.gov/do-globe-observer/challenges/go-on-a-trail

As you collect data, remember: Leave no trace, take only observations. GO on a trail... and STAY on it. By staying on marked trails, you are protecting sensitive ecosystems and reducing your risk of coming into contact with dangerous plants and animals.

Gardening With Kids! Getting kids to eat more fruits and veggies can be challenging, but research shows that when kids help grow fruits and vegetables, they are more likely to eat more produce and try different kinds, too. Not only that, but gardening also provides a host of learning experiences that are good for little growing minds and bodies. Try growing some lettuce or radish seeds in a pot or in a small space outside. #healthySD https://healthysd.gov/calling-all-gardeners/

Today, staff member Anne Lewis spoke to students in Dallas TX from the Notre Dame School about being an explorer! That's a long ways from La Framboise Island! We've connected with students and teachers from Texas, Oklahoma, Utah, Canada and Vietnam!

Today students in Mr. Eckler and Ms. Hope's computer class went on a virtual field trip through the woods in South Dakota with National Geographic Education Fellow Anne Lewis!

Anne is also an educator at the South Dakota Discovery Center (www.sd-discovery.org) and is passionate about building the explorer's mindset in students and teachers through outdoor adventures involving citizen science.

Students had an awesome adventure exploring nature on historic La Framboise Island and learning about finding the nature around them on the Seek App by iNaturalist.

The app is free to download on both Android and iOS devices. Try it on your next nature walk! #nolimitsjustpossibilities #OurPlanet #NationalGeographic #SkypeClassroom

How are you observing #EarthDay?

Staff member Anne Lewis is talking to students and teachers around the world via Skype to show them how to be an explorer through deep observation skills. We can take better care of #OurPlanet if we know how it works. Central South Dakota students who are attending our History Adventures program will enjoy this same program in person!
