While June is typically the wettest month in South Dakota, increasing drought conditions remains a top concern for livestock producers across the state.

Latest drought reports indicted over 60% of the state was in varying levels of drought after an unusually dry spring. In this week's Cattlemen's Call report South Dakota State University State Climatologist, Laura Edwards, shares what could be in store for the rest of the summer.

USDA has been preparing for almost two years for New World Screwworm because it was not a matter of ‘if’ but ‘when’ it would make it to the United States.

While it has officially been reported in Texas, it’s important to remember that this parasite has been eradicated from the US once before.

In today’s special edition of the Cattlemen’s Call, South Dakota State Veterinarian, Dr. Mendel Miller says we can be confident that this is not a food safety concern because of the nature of the fly and the rigorous meat inspection protocols that are in place.

This past week SDCA Executive Director, Taya Runyan, joined agricultural leaders from across the state for a diplomatic roundtable in Sioux Falls.

South Dakota Trade hosted USDA leadership including Dr. Mindy Brashears, Under Secretary for Food Safety; Luke Lindberg, Under Secretary for Trade and Foreign Agricultural Affairs; and Richard Fordyce, Under Secretary for Farm Production and Conservation.

The discussion ranged from food safety and labeling standards to market access, trade expansion, research, and producer support.
