UJS is committed to building public trust and confidence in the courts through transparency, communication, education and community engagement.

Two judicial officers attended the 2026 American Legion Boys State of South Dakota to provide students a better knowledge of the fundamental principles of government within the state. Supreme Court Justice Mark E. Salter led a Boys State session on appellate court, and Fifth Judicial Circuit Judge Marshall C. Lovrien led a session on trial court.

American Legion Boys State was held on May 25-29, 2026, at Northern State University in Aberdeen.

Yankton County Drug & DUI Court will hold a graduation ceremony on Wednesday, June 10, 2026, at 1:30 p.m. CDT in Courtroom A on the second floor of the Yankton County Safety Center, 410 Walnut St., Yankton.

With their friends and family in attendance, participants who have successfully completed all phases of this drug and DUI court program will be honored. The event is open to the public and media. A reception will follow.

The featured speaker will be Rhonda Hart, a counselor at Lewis and Clark Behavioral Health Services in Yankton. Rhonda has worked in the addiction field for more than 30 years and previously spent 26 years working for the South Dakota Department of Corrections helping inmates find recovery.

Legal aid attorneys with Dakota Plains Legal Services' Justice Bus offer free legal services to the communities they visit. Eligibility requirements apply.

The South Dakota Unified Judicial System is hiring a Court Services Officer in Mitchell, South Dakota

This position supervises adults and juveniles on or anticipating probation by preparing presentence investigations and social histories, interviewing victims, assessing offenders’ risks and needs, making recommendations to the court for sentences and dispositions, developing treatment plans and linking offenders with appropriate community-based services, and investigating, supervising, and counseling individuals to facilitate their personal, social, and economic adjustment in their communities. Travel is required. This position will be required to work hours during evenings and weekends, as necessary. Successful completion of a criminal background investigation is required for employment.

The South Dakota Unified Judicial System is hiring a Deputy Court Clerk in Rapid City.

This position assists with cases filed with the court clerk’s office including criminal, civil, traffic, and other cases from initial filing to final disposition by developing and maintaining case files, assisting with scheduling and assigning hearings, assisting in courtroom proceedings, and implementing procedures for monetary dispositions; provides customer services daily to a wide variety of individuals and agencies; and acts on behalf of the court clerk in his or her absence.

Brown County Drug & DUI Court will hold a graduation ceremony on Thursday, May 28, 2026, at 1:30 p.m. CDT in the Third Floor Courtroom at the Brown County Courthouse, 101 First Ave. SE, Aberdeen.

This milestone represents the treatment court graduates’ dedication, perseverance and commitment to making positive changes in their lives. With their friends and family in attendance, participants who have successfully completed all phases of this treatment court program will be honored.
