Registration for our next Forging Ahead homeschool program is now open!
Forging Ahead will meet on Wednesday, September 2nd from 11:45 AM - 12:30 PM at the Pigeon Forge Public Library. Each week, we'll feature a different activity for children ages 6-13—this week's activity is LEGOs! Sign-ups are limited to 12 participants.

City of Pigeon Forge Mourns the Loss of Dolly Parton

PIGEON FORGE, Tenn. August 25, 2026- The City of Pigeon Forge joins people across Tennessee, the nation and the world in mourning the loss of Dolly Parton, a beloved daughter of the Great Smoky Mountains and a cherished member of the Pigeon Forge community.

Dolly was far more than a world-renowned singer, songwriter, actress, entertainer and philanthropist. To the people of Pigeon Forge, she was one of our own.

For decades, Dolly's name and heart have been woven into the story of Pigeon Forge. Through Dollywood, the many businesses and attractions she helped bring to the community, and the countless ways she invested in the people of East Tennessee, Dolly helped shape Pigeon Forge into the community it is today.

But perhaps her greatest legacy is not measured in the success she achieved. It is measured in the lives she touched.

Dolly never forgot where she came from. Despite achieving worldwide fame, she remained deeply connected to her Tennessee roots and consistently used her success to give back. Her generosity, her commitment to children and literacy, her support of families and communities, and her genuine love for the people of this region have left an impact that will continue for generations.

“Today, Pigeon Forge has lost more than an icon. We have lost one of our own,” said City Manager David Wear, “Dolly loved these mountains, she loved this community, and she never forgot where she came from. Her generosity, her spirit and her belief in the people of East Tennessee have made an immeasurable difference. We are grateful for everything she gave to Pigeon Forge and to the world."

The City of Pigeon Forge extends its deepest condolences to Dolly's family, friends, loved ones, colleagues, fans and the many people whose lives she touched.

Her music will continue to be heard. Her stories will continue to be told. Her generosity will continue through the many lives she changed.

The City of Pigeon Forge is grateful for the life, love and legacy of Dolly Parton.

Monday's Memory...a look back at historic Pigeon Forge

Located on the Parkway in Pigeon Forge, Latham's IGA was a convenient location for local families to shop for their groceries. The store's owner Joe Latham was born the eighth of fourteen children on a Sevierville farm in 1923 to Rev. Michael and Mary Jane (Hembree) Latham. During the Great Depression, Joe headed to Ohio in hopes of landing a job at a tire factory but was unsuccessful. Little did he know, the job he DID get would shape the rest of his life. He began working at an A & P Supermarket and quickly moved up.
In 1941, he was drafted into WWII but returned to the A & P after the war. He married and had three children with Charlotte Phelps though they later divorced. Joe opened his own combo grocery store/restaurant/gas station which became a successful chain called Blue Moon. He remarried in 1975 to Carolyn Wegman with whom he had a fourth child.
The Lathams returned to Sevier County in 1972 buying the Park View Motel in Pigeon Forge and opening Latham's IGA Supermarket in Pigeon Forge. This was a 15,000 sq. ft. store, deli and bakery. His success continued with 2 additional stores in Sevierville. By all accounts, he was a generous business owner contributing his time and money to local charities. Joe passed at the age of 81 in 2004. Sadly and contrary to this ad, Latham's IGA did not last the next 200 years though that was a lofty goal! Did your family shop at Latham's? Thank you for spotlighting Community Helpers Month at the library! We've had so much fun learning from our friends at the street department, Pigeon Forge Police Department, City of Pigeon Forge Fire Department, and mass transit department. Monday's Memory...a look back at historic Pigeon Forge

More from the wonderful scrapbook collection of Della McCarter! These were two events in Pigeon Forge covered in May of 1972. One was a turkey dinner fund raiser for the Pigeon Forge Chamber of Commerce held at Green Valley Restaurant (ya'll remember how good their food was??) in Pigeon Forge. The second event was an open house at Pigeon Forge Elementary School. The purpose of that event according to then-principal John Dale Trotter was to familiarize parents with the "new facilities at the school." Was this an expansion (the round building?) or when the school moved to the Pine Mountain location?

Many wonderful photos of local folks are in this coverage! Kathy and Robert Simmons (owner at the time of the Old Mill), KOA owners Mr. and Mrs. Laverne Kelch, Douglas Ferguson (Pigeon Forge Pottery), Mr. and Mrs. Mike Shular (Shular's Realty), Mr. and Mrs. George Worsham (Vacation Lodge), Mr. and Mrs. Gene Henderson (Latham's IGA) and others. What great captures of so many local business people in the same place!
