Periodic Safety Checkpoints

The Pikeville Police Department will be conducting periodic traffic safety checkpoints at designated locations throughout 2025. Pikeville Police Department strives daily to promote safer roadways for those we serve. A common and proactive measure to achieve this includes roadside safety checkpoints and saturating known problematic areas within the city. The intent of a

traffic safety checkpoint is to provide a high visibility public safety service, with an increased focus on issues ensuring good order on the roadway. These areas of focus during the checkpoints will include occupant protection and seatbelt adherence, sobriety and proper licensing of operators, valid insurance status, as well as other violations of the Kentucky Revised Statutes that may arise during the interaction. All traffic safety checkpoints will be conducted at supervisory approved locations and in adherence to Kentucky Revised Statutes and agency policies. Checkpoints will provide just a momentary delay for those operating on our roadways in a safe and legal manner. Potential traffic safety checkpoint locations as follows:

-Cedar Creek Rd and Cedar Hills Dr intersection

-Island Creek Rd near Island Creek Clinic

-Chloe Rd near Pikeville Elementary School and Bypass Rd

-Town Mountain Rd near 997 Town Mountain Rd and US-119 intersection

-US23 & Cassidy Boulevard Traffic Lights

-US-460 and US-23 intersection

-Hambley Boulevard/Bypass Rd in various locations

Pikeville Police Department is hopeful that through traffic safety checkpoints and numerous other traffic patrol measures, we can provide safer roadway conditions for our citizens, as well as our guests. In doing so, we can lower the frequency of intoxicated drivers, deter potential collisions and injuries to motorists, and accomplish a better Pikeville. Please contact Pikeville Police Department immediately if you observe unsafe driving practices or potentially criminal acts by dialing 911 in case of emergency, or (606) 437-5111 for all non-emergency issues. The Police, Fire Department and 911 Dispatch combine their efforts to provide Christmas gifts to less fortunate families during the Christmas Holiday. In 2022 we had the privilege to serve 45 local children and their families throughout the county. We provide not only gifts, but we hold a breakfast for the entire family. During this event we play games, eat, and enjoy each others company for the day. Each family receives Christmas dinner in a box, so that their families can enjoy a meal at home on Christmas Day. We are thankful for the many businesses and persons that help sponsor these events. If you are interested in donating to the Christmas with a First Responder program, please visit the Pikeville Police Station at 111 Scotty Hamilton Way, Pikeville, KY 41501 or call (606) 437-5111. Hammy Plush Pigs

Hammy Pigs are for sale for $20 each. The money from Hammy's assist in funding the Christmas with a First Responder Program. Hammy Visits The Police Station children's book

Hammy and his mother Petunia plan a day to visit Officer Scott at the Pikeville Police Station. Officer Scott and Hammy take a tour of the Pikeville Police Department and Hammy learns about all the duties and responsibilities police officers have in their jobs and in their community. Hammy Visits The Police Station is dedicated to Pikeville Police Department Officer Scotty Hamilton who lost his life in the line of duty on March 13, 2018. The proceeds from this book will assist in funding the Pikeville Police Department’s Community Outreach program and the Christmas with a First Responder program. These programs provide food, clothing, school supplies, and toys to children of all ages throughout the year. Hammy Visits The Police Station books are for sale for $5.00 at the Pikeville Police Department and at The Shoppes 225 on Second Street in Downtown Pikeville. Please join us in congratulating our newest promotions within the Pikeville Police Department!

At last night’s City Commission meeting, Sergeant Sonny Buckley and Sergeant Billy Ratliff were officially promoted to the rank of Lieutenant, while Officer Alexis Stambaugh was promoted to the rank of Sergeant.

Each of these officers has demonstrated dedication, professionalism, and a strong commitment to serving the citizens of Pikeville. Their promotions reflect years of hard work, leadership, and the respect they have earned from both their fellow officers and the community they serve.

What made the evening even more special was having their families there alongside them to celebrate these important milestones. Behind every successful officer is a support system that sacrifices, encourages, and stands beside them through the challenges of this profession.

We are proud of Lieutenant Buckley, Lieutenant Ratliff, and Sergeant Stambaugh, and we look forward to seeing them continue to lead and serve our community with integrity, service, and courage.

Congratulations to all three on their well-earned promotions!

Today, on Peace Officers Memorial Day, we pause to honor the law enforcement officers who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to their communities and this nation. During National Police Week, we remember not only the badge they wore, but the lives they lived, the families they loved, and the commitment they made to protecting others.

Members of the Pikeville Police Department payed tribute to our fallen officers by visiting gravesites, presenting wreaths, and honoring their memory at the memorial on Division Street in downtown Pikeville. Their sacrifice will never be forgotten.

This week has also served as a reminder of the incredible community we are honored to serve. We have been humbled by the outpouring of support from citizens and local businesses who have stopped by with meals, gift bags, gift cards, kind words, and simple gestures of appreciation. Those acts of kindness mean more than words can express.

To our community, we thank you. Your support reminds the men and women of this department why we do this job and who we proudly serve every day.

Today, we remember the fallen. We support those who continue to serve. And we thank the community that stands beside us.

Did you know...
*Properly worn seat belts reduce the risk of a fatal injury to the front-seat passengers by 45%-65%.
*Roughly 49%-50% of traffic fatalities involved victims not wearing seat belts.
*Air Bags are designed to work with seat belts, not replace them.
*Fatalities can occur at speeds as low as 12MPH; most fatal collisions happen within 25 miles of home.

Taking a few seconds, can make a lifetime of difference!

We're sharing this as part of our High Five seat belt program with the Pike County Sheriff's Office-KY, Kentucky Office of Highway Safety, Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, and NHTSA. The goal isn't just enforcement- it's education, prevention, and changing habits before a tragedy happens.
