A Severe Thunderstorm Watch is in effect for much of Eastern Kentucky until 8:00 PM. The primary hazard will be damaging winds.

This Severe Thunderstorm Watch includes the following counties: Bell, Breathitt, Clay, Elliott, Estill, Floyd, Harlan, Jackson, Johnson, Knott, Knox, Laurel, Lee, Leslie, Letcher, Magoffin, Martin, Menifee, Morgan, Owsley, Perry, Pike, Powell, Whitley, and Wolfe.

Cooling Center Information:

With the extremely high temperatures expected this week, the City of Pikeville has worked with the Pikeville Housing Authority to make the front lobby of Myers Tower available as a cooling center from 8 am until 6 pm every day beginning today until Monday, July 6.

We have also made arrangements for additional space in another downtown facility should the need arise.

🌡️ Extreme Heat Alert 🌡️

With dangerously hot temperatures expected the rest of the week and into this weekend, Pikeville Public Safety, Pikeville Police Department Pikeville Fire Department, City of Pikeville and Pikeville City Tourism encourages everyone to take extra precautions to not only protect yourself and family but your pets and neighbors as well.

Here are a few simple ways to stay safe:

💧 HYDRATE, HYDRATE, HYDRATE! 💧 Drink plenty of water throughout the day even if you don't feel thirsty. If you're working or exercising in the heat, an electrolyte drink can also help replace minerals lost through sweating

🏠 Limit time outdoors, especially during the hottest part of the day (10:00 AM–6:00 PM).

👕 Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing and sunscreen if you must be outside.

🚗 Never leave children, pets, or vulnerable adults unattended in a vehicle, even for a few minutes. Temperatures inside a parked car can become life-threatening very quickly.

👵 Check on elderly neighbors, family members, and anyone with medical conditions who may be more susceptible to heat-related illnesses.

🐶 Make sure pets have plenty of fresh water, shade, and avoid walking them on hot pavement.

Know the signs of heat-related illness. If someone experiences confusion, loses consciousness, has hot, dry skin, or stops sweating, call 911 immediately. For heat exhaustion, move the person to a cooler place, provide water if they are alert, and seek medical attention if symptoms worsen.

Again, stay hydrated and stay safe over the holiday weekend.
