Pillow, PA

Pillow, PA A small historic town surrounded by the Mahantango Creek and Mahantango Mountains. Founded in 1818 The town was called Schneidershtettle.

Pillow was founded in 1818, almost 200 years ago by a land developer named John Snyder. In 1864 the town was incorporated as the borough of Uniontown. Because of a conflict with another Uniontown in Pennsylvania, the post office was given the name of Pillow. It is believed that it was named after Major General Gideon Johnson Pillow who at the time was commanding the U.S. Army troops in the Mexica

n War with some distinction. He was very wealthy, being a politician, lawyer, farmer and military general. You can read more about General Gideon Pillow in the Pillow History Book. Although the town was officially incorporated as Uniontown, the local people commonly referred to it as Pillow and in 1965 the townspeople voted to change the name. Pillow is nestled at the foot of the Mahantango Mountain on the south. The Mahantango Creek, a tributary of the Susquehanna River, bounds Pillow on the west, the north and the east. Mahantango, a Native American word, translates as "good hunting grounds".

The Pillow Historical Society is an official Wreaths Across America sponsor, and we will be hosting a wreath laying ceremony at the Grand View Cemetery and the Union Cemetery on December 13, 2025.
The events will begin at 11am at the Grand View Cemetery on Union Street in Pillow where we will have a short ceremony followed by volunteers placing wreaths at the headstones of the fallen service members laid to rest there. Immediately following this ceremony, a group of volunteers will travel to the Union Cemetery on Cemetery Hill Road, Herndon, to honor the fallen service members there as well. We recognize that many Pillow service members are buried at other locations, so we will place a special wreath in honor of all Pillow service members wherever they may be laid to rest.
These two Pillow cemeteries are official Wreaths Across America (WAA) locations and will join more than 4900 other locations across the country for National Wreaths Across America Day. Coordinated and led by local volunteers, over 100 veterans’ wreaths will be placed on the headstones of our fallen service members. This annual event seeks to further the WAA mission of Remember, Honor, Teach, ensuring that the memory of those who served our country endures.
If you would like to contribute to this event, you can:
• Sponsor a wreath: The cost is $17 each, and checks can be made out to Pillow Historical Society, and sent to PO Box 193, Pillow, PA. Please designate the contribution to be used for Wreaths Across America. You may sponsor as many wreaths as you would like. Any excess money received will be reserved for the 2026 ceremony.
• Help place the wreaths: We will need volunteers to assist with placement at the two cemeteries. It may be cold, so you need to come prepared to walk through the cemetery. Please contact Kaye Thoma at [email protected] or call 717-362-9885 if you would like to help place the wreaths.
• Bake some cookies: We will have hot soup, hot chocolate, hot spiced cider, coffee, and some sweets to offer our guests. If you would like to contribute anything, please contact Sandra Lamenza at [email protected] or call/text 717-307-8396.
• Help with clean-up: At a designated time, the wreaths will have to be removed and transported to an appropriate location. I have been told that the goats like them!!
• Just come and enjoy the opportunity to Remember, Honor and Teach.
The Pillow Historical Society Museum will open following the ceremony and remain open until 2pm. Refreshments will be available. We hope to see you there,
