Hurricane Season Taught Us: Wildfires Could Be Next

When Hurricane Helene hit, thousands of acres of downed timber and debris became fuel for wildfires. Wildfires weren't just a western problem anymore. The good news? North Carolina's fire service and the NC Forest Service are ready. We work together year-round to prepare. But we can't do it alone.

Your Role in Wildfire Preparedness:

✅ Create defensible space around your home (clear dead trees, remove branches overhanging your roof)
✅ Properly dispose of yard debris
✅ Search out & follow burn bans when they're in effect, utilizing the NC Forest Service
✅ Know your evacuation routes before an emergency
✅ Stay informed through trusted weather sources

For Fire Departments and First Responders: Wildland firefighting training starts now. Don't wait for fire season. Wildfire readiness is a shared responsibility. Preparation begins now.

It is still camping season. Families are packing tents, coolers, and firewood. But here's what kills camping trips and lives: uncontrolled campfires.

A campfire that seems under control can spread in seconds, especially in North Carolina's dry summers.

Before You Camp:

✅ Check for burn bans: Visit the NC Forest Service Wildfire Report. Some areas prohibit campfires entirely during dry conditions.
✅ Clear the area: Remove leaves, branches, and debris at least 10 feet away from your fire pit.
✅ Never leave fires unattended: Not even to run to the bathroom. A watched fire is a safe fire.
✅ Keep water nearby: Have a bucket of water or extinguisher within arm's reach at all times.
✅ Fully extinguish before bed or leaving: Drown your fire. Stir the ashes. Drown it again. Don't leave hot ashes unattended!

One uncontrolled campfire can spread to hundreds of acres. One family's carelessness can threaten an entire community.

🚨Hazardous Weather Update 8/21/26🚨

A Flood Watch is in effect for central and eastern NC through Saturday morning, with 2–5 inches of rain possible. Strong storms on Friday could bring damaging winds and large hail, and heavy downpours may cause flash flooding as a slow‑moving cold front moves slowly across the state. More rain may continue into Saturday before drier weather returns Sunday.

Heat index values near 100°F are still possible in SE NC on Friday, with a Heat Advisory in place.

A stalled front on today will keep rain in the forecast and bring a threat of strong thunderstorms and localized flash flooding, especially in areas experiencing slow-moving or repeated storms. The active pattern continues into Saturday as another cold front moves through, sparking isolated afternoon thunderstorms that could produce damaging wind gusts. Relief arrives by Sunday as the system clears the region, making way for mostly sunny skies to end the weekend.
