Official Fire Information for 79 Fire 2026; located 2 miles west of Fairburn, Custer County, SD.

We are tracking the progress of suppression efforts on 79 Fire West of Pine Ridge. The smoke column will be visible from the reservation but at this time there is no threat to the reservation. We have resource prepositioned and aircraft is en route to support suppression efforts. Please do not report this smoke column.

Resources have contained 45% as of yesterday’s update. They will continue to improve containment throughout the day.

The agency is aware and tracking progress on the fire near Gordon, NE.

Smoke will still be visible in the area, please use caution in the area. Fire has been mapped at 450 acres.

If looking for active fires in the area download the “Watchduty” app.

Resources are stretched thin nationally already. Please watch your ignition sources whether it is vehicles , ashes, unsupervised children, fireworks or tool use. There is a burn ban in effect.

Update on Timber Incident.

Fire is estimated at 400 acres.

Resources remained on scene through the night to add control features.

Heavy equipment will be used today to harden the edges of the fire.

Current containment is at 20%.

There are predict high wind gusts throughout the day.

Cooler Temperatures and Higher Relative Humidity will allow resources to improve containment throughout the day.

Smoke will be visible in the area and may impact BIA 27 please travel safely.

Investigation on cause is on going.

Resources have stopped forward progress of the Timber Incident near Wounded Knee.

Heavy equipment is being used to establish lines around the current perimeter.

OST Emergency Management has lifted the evacuation notice.

Smoke will be visible in the area for the following days please use caution while traveling on BIA 27. Use caution as emergency vehicles are using BIA 27.

Resources will remain on scene throughout the night to monitor the situation.

Investigation is on going to determine cause.
