UPDATE:

Investigators have received information regarding the unidentified female.

At this time, we would like to thank the public for the tremendous response and assistance. The information shared by community members has been invaluable to this ongoing investigation.

We appreciate everyone’s continued support and will provide additional updates as appropriate.

PUBLIC ASSISTANCE REQUEST HELP IDENTIFY DECEASED FEMALE

The Oglala Sioux Tribe Department of Public Safety and the FBI are requesting the public’s assistance in identifying an unknown Native American female who was located deceased near Denby Dam, west of Batesland, South Dakota, on June 6, 2026.

The female is believed to be between 40 and 55 years old, approximately 5’1” tall, weighing about 172 pounds, with black hair.

Investigators are hoping the distinctive tattoos shown in the attached photos may help identify her. If you recognize any of these tattoos or believe you know who this individual may be, please contact law enforcement immediately.

FBI Announces $50,000 Reward in the Murder of Logan Warrior Goings

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Minneapolis Field Office has announced a reward of up to $50,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the individual or individuals responsible for the murder of 6-year-old Logan Warrior Goings.

On the evening of May 5, 2022, Logan was inside a residence in the #4 Housing Area in Oglala when one or more unidentified suspects fired multiple rounds into the home. Logan was tragically struck and killed. Several other people, including children, were also inside the residence at the time.

This heartbreaking case remains an active priority for federal, tribal, and local law enforcement partners. Logan’s family deserves answers, and those responsible must be held accountable.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

THE RAPID CITY CENTRAL STATES FAIRGROUNDS SHOOTING INVESTIGATION

The suspect involved in the shooting incident at the Central States Fairgrounds in Rapid City SD has been identified as 58-year-old John Troy Lee of Rapid City.

OSTDPS Officers were informed that the suspect was possibly headed toward the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. Following a search and coordinated law enforcement response, Lee was located on the southwest portion of the reservation by OSTDPS officers after receiving tips from local residents. During the encounter, the suspect fired at officers, and one officer was struck by gunfire and sustained injuries. The suspect was subsequently killed during the encounter.

The incident remains under investigation by the appropriate agencies.

Additional information will be released as it becomes available and as the investigation permits.

Any residents of the Oglala Community who sustained or currently have water damage to their residence from the thunderstorm. The Rec Center is open and will be place for residents who need to evacuate their homes. Emergency Management and OSTDPS will continue to assess damage and be in the area.

Honored were Nia Romero-Perez, and Madison Janis who recently graduated from 911 telecommunications dispatcher training with dispatcher themed star quilts. Also OSTDPS would like to congratulate Dispatcher Candy Apple for being awarded “Dispatcher of the Year”. OSTDPS would like to thank all dispatchers for their committed devotion and professionalism in their dispatcher roles. First on the call and guardians of the responders! The OST DPS is currently investigating the structure fire that occurred this morning in the Old Crazy Horse housing community in Pine Ridge SD.

Emergency responders from multiple agencies arrived on scene and worked to contain the fire, evacuate nearby residences, and ensure the safety of the surrounding area.

A deceased individual was located inside the residence. The cause of the fire remains under active investigation. Due to the nature of the incident, federal and local investigators are processing the scene to determine the circumstances surrounding the fire.

We ask the community to avoid the area while officials complete their work. Additional information will be released when appropriate.

Our thoughts are with the family and all those affected.

Officers with the Oglala Sioux Tribe Department of Public Safety (OSTDPS) recently executed a search warrant within the community.

During the operation, officers seized a large quantity of alcohol intended for illegal distribution (bootlegging), along with several stolen fi****ms, ammunition, and U.S. currency. Multiple individuals were taken into custody.

Let this serve as a warning: illegal activity, including bootlegging and possession of stolen fi****ms, will not be tolerated. OSTDPS will continue to actively investigate and pursue those who threaten the safety of our community.

If you are involved in this type of activity, expect enforcement action.
