🚨🚔🚨Drunk driving is illegal and deadly.🚨🚔🚨
Drivers will see more law enforcement on the road from August 19th through September 7th as part of the Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over high visibility enforcement campaign.
If you have a friend who is about to drink and drive, take the keys away and let a sober driver get your friend home safely.

🚨CAR SEAT CLINIC ALERT 🚨

Look for our BAT mobile parked by the Allen Cap Office 🚔

We will be providing car seats to families who qualify. Please bring your child to the car seat clinic so we can get an accurate weight and height on your child and make proper adjustments to your child's car seat. We will also provide car seat inspections for families who already have car seats to determine that your child's seat is correctly installed. We will have seats for children of all ages, from infants to big kids. We will have convertible car seats, high back boosters with the 5-point harness, high back and no back boosters that utilize the seat belt. Reminder, if your child is under 4'9 they are required to be in a booster seat.

As the summer winds down, let's remember that we still have to keep everyone safe on the roadways. Don't let your family or friends drive drunk. Always designate a sober driver. Let's keep our tradition alive with that sage & sweetgrass on the dash.

From August 19 through September 7, 2026, the OSTDPS Highway Safety , South Dakota Department of Public Safety-Office of Highway Safety, and the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration will be working alongside local law enforcement to deter drunk driving and prevent tragedies during the Labor Day holiday weekend. The message is clear: Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over.

📝SCHOOL IS OFFICIALLY BACK IN SESSION

That means school buses are back on the road 🚌 safely transporting our children to and from school in the morning's and evening's. Please be extra cautious when a school bus is near, watch out for children on the curb, or in their driveways waiting for their bus. Be mindful that school buses make frequent stops and it is the law to stop when the stop arm on the school bus is extended🛑 and the lights are flashing red 🚨 Plan ahead, leave a little earlier for your morning commute and plan for school buses to be out on the road across the reservation. If you witness a vehicle illegally passing a school bus when the stop arm is extended and the red lights are flashing, report that driver by dialing 911 or 605-867-5111. Help keep our children safe today and every day.

Update for incident at the East Wind Casino. At approx 10:24 P.M. on the 9th of August, 2026. OST DPS received a call about an individual discharging a firearm in the parking lot. OST DPS Officers along with Bennett Co Deputies responded. The male was placed into custody. No one was injured and the case is still under investigations. There is no threat to the public. Thanks for your cooperation and assistance with this matter.

Thursday, OSTDPS Highway Safety troopers Long Soldier and Archambeau along with Data Clerk Kimimila Jack and Highway Safety Specialist Terra Garnier, Training officer Rich Jensen and cadets attended the Oglala Lakota Nation Health Fair.
Educational information was given to the public for Car Seats, Teen Driving, Heatstroke awareness, Vehicle and car seat recalls. Interested persons also received information on law enforcement and communications officers.
Thank you to all that stopped by the BAT mobile.
Remember to watch for pedestrians, skate boarders, bike riders, and other drivers during the fair.
There will be saturation patrols by officers as well as other agencies. Let's all enjoy the activities during the fair. Buckle up and slow down.

Relatives, as we gather to celebrate this weekend remember hot car deaths are preventable. Never leave your child alone in a vehicle; their body temperature rises 3 to 5 times faster than an adult's. Your vehicle's temperature can rise up to 50 degrees warmer than the outside temperatures. Parking in the shade or rolling down your windows does little to nothing to cool down the vehicle's temperature. Hot car deaths happen yearly, and they are 100% preventable.🌡️ Once you PARK, STOP. LOOK. LOCK.

Signs of heatstroke although they may vary:
🥵Red, hot, and moist or dry skin
😥Absent sweating, even though the child is warm
❤️‍🩹Strong rapid pulse or a slow weak pulse
🤕Throbbing headache
🫨Dizziness
🤢 Nausea
😵‍💫 Confusion
😤Grouchiness or strange behavior

🚨If you see a child trapped inside a vehicle, immediately act and remove the child from the hot car. Place the child in a cool place and dial 911🚓🚑
