A fun fact for your Thursday - Minnesota ranks 4th for miles of roadway per person. In Minnesota we had approximately 290,618 total lane miles. Consumer Affairs ranked Minnesota's roads as #1 in the nation in 2024. Our local government maintains about 77% of the roadways, state agencies 19% and the federal government 4%. In rural areas a third of our roadways are dirt.

The Clay County Department of Motor Vehicles in Moorhead will no longer offer same-day driver’s licenses and ID cards as of Jan. 30.

Moorhead was one of two locations that offered these licenses. Lakeville ended its participation in the program in October 2025. The cards were part of a Driver and Vehicle Services pilot program that allowed customers to apply for their license and walk out with it the same day.

If you currently have a same-day license or ID card, it will remain valid until it expires. Learn more at dps.mn.gov/news/dvs/same-day-dls-ending-moorhead-jan-30

Ice Fishing Shelters/Houses - Do you need a license plate from the DMV??

A shelter that collapses, folds or is disassembled for transportation is considered Portable. Portable shelters only need DNR Shelter License and identification when left unattended, which is defined as all occupants being more than 200 feet away. There is no DVS/DMV requirements for Portable Shelters.

Wheeled fish houses are considered non-portable and must be licensed both by DNR and DVS (DMV). DNR Shelter Licenses can typically be purchased anywhere you can purchase a Fishing License. Wheeled houses that are GVWR of 3000 # or less and do not have beds in them can be registered with a Lifetime Trailer License Sticker. Wheeled houses that are more than 3000 # GVWR and do not have any beds can be registered with a Trailer License Plate. Wheeled houses with beds are considered Recreational and can be registered with a Recreational (Camper) License Plate.

*Ice Shelters/Houses on Private Property not using public roads would be the only potential exception to these rules.

Let's Talk Google...
When you google something you get a "helpful" AI Overview at the top of the page. However - this is an answer created from AI (computers) skimming websites that have information that is similar to what you are looking for and giving you a summary of what was found. This isn't helpful when it comes to State ID, Drivers Licence, REAL ID, REAL DL, Enhanced ID/DL, CDL Class A, B or C REAL ID or Enhanced. There are SO many combinations of Drivers License and IDs and each has it's own specific requirements. You should always verify what you need to bring by going directly to the State Website: https://dps.mn.gov/

As the photos show - AI says you can use a bank statement as proof of address for a CDL, The State Website doesn't list a bank statement as proof of residence for CDL.
