Have you heard? We’re hosting a license plate design contest!

Your design could be on the next Minnesota state parks and trails specialty license plate! The winning design will join the current specialty license plate as an option to support Minnesota state parks and trails. Both specialty plates will give you free entry to all Minnesota state parks and recreation areas.

Here are a few key contest details:
🎨 You can begin working on your designs right now! We will begin accepting designs online in two weeks, starting Sept. 15 until Oct 31. Follow us for updates on the submissions portal!
🌊 Designs must celebrate the North Shore and the Lake Superior agate, as determined by the Minnesota Legislature in 2026.
🌲 You can also incorporate iconic locations, scenery or recreational activities into your design that capture the essence of Minnesota state parks and trails.
🚫 All designs must be created without the use of artificial intelligence, as determined by the Minnesota Legislature.
👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Open to all Minnesota residents. One person may submit multiple entries.

Did you know that we have Start Seeing Motorcyclists license plates that can be displayed on a passenger automobile, noncommercial one-ton pickup truck, motorcycle or recreational vehicle? There is a minimum contribution of $10 annually to the motorcycle safety fund.

A fun fact for your Thursday - Minnesota ranks 4th for miles of roadway per person. In Minnesota we had approximately 290,618 total lane miles. Consumer Affairs ranked Minnesota's roads as #1 in the nation in 2024. Our local government maintains about 77% of the roadways, state agencies 19% and the federal government 4%. In rural areas a third of our roadways are dirt.

The Clay County Department of Motor Vehicles in Moorhead will no longer offer same-day driver’s licenses and ID cards as of Jan. 30.

Moorhead was one of two locations that offered these licenses. Lakeville ended its participation in the program in October 2025. The cards were part of a Driver and Vehicle Services pilot program that allowed customers to apply for their license and walk out with it the same day.

Ice Fishing Shelters/Houses - Do you need a license plate from the DMV??

A shelter that collapses, folds or is disassembled for transportation is considered Portable. Portable shelters only need DNR Shelter License and identification when left unattended, which is defined as all occupants being more than 200 feet away. There is no DVS/DMV requirements for Portable Shelters.

Wheeled fish houses are considered non-portable and must be licensed both by DNR and DVS (DMV). DNR Shelter Licenses can typically be purchased anywhere you can purchase a Fishing License. Wheeled houses that are GVWR of 3000 # or less and do not have beds in them can be registered with a Lifetime Trailer License Sticker. Wheeled houses that are more than 3000 # GVWR and do not have any beds can be registered with a Trailer License Plate. Wheeled houses with beds are considered Recreational and can be registered with a Recreational (Camper) License Plate.

*Ice Shelters/Houses on Private Property not using public roads would be the only potential exception to these rules.
